I'm looking to rent somewhere for a long weekend at the end of September, big enough to accomodate 8 to 10 people, either close to the sea, on the north Yorks moors or in the dales. Ideally, quite well equipped and, even more ideally, close to a very good restaurant for a good meal on the day, and a pub, for a birthday bash. Some good walking country would be handy too. Any ideas? I would even consider a hotel if it wasn't crazily expensive but prefer the self catering idea.

I spent a night here last weekend http://www.handpickedhotels.co.uk/hotels/wood-hall... halfway between York and Harrogate, it's very very nice indeed - huge luxurious room, food was wonderful, service top notch, location, grounds and views spectacular. Not the cheapest, but we got a dinner, bed & breakfast deal which for the experience was great value IMO.

Few nice looking pubs in some lovely villages nearby (Linton, Wetherby).

Thanks but that's the area some of the group will want to get away from, being residents of Wetherby, Bardsey and East Keswick...................

Suggest you look at ownersdirect.co.uk. Off the top of my head there are at least 2 places that will do you very well. One of them had a film crew recording a well-known cooking programme last week-end.

Here's one for the Yorkshire Dales, in Middleham.

We booked this place for the weekend, when we went to a big party in Yarm a few weeks ago. Heres the link, its just 5 minutes from Yarm train station and about 5/10 mins from Yarm centre it cost us £8 in the taxi. heres the link. http://www.ownersrentals.com/property/2135.html

This ticks the boxes for you http://www.thestaratharome.co.uk/index.htm ,although it looks like it could get quite pricey frown

Great food, and it's on the edge of some cracking moorland scenery (with some epic driving roads to boot!)

You could try The Black Swan in Leyburn, a quiet market town with 4 pubs and a very nice restaurant, The sandpiper.
Alternatively, give Sean a call at Clyde House B&B, it won't break the bank and offers good value for money.

You will have enough to do here, walking is quite extensive, some nice shops and other places not too far away.

I think it could be what you are looking for.

Hi I live in Harrogate and do the same, two websites I find helpful are cottages4u and the National Trust website for rentals. I know the first has a few in Whitby, Staithes etc..
