Phi Phi is where we (me and a mate) went (via Krabi for one night) and it is definitely the prettiest of the islands from what I have seen and what I have been told…it is very small and therefore quite a bit of fun. If you do go there I recommend going to the Maya Beach (the beach from the movie The Beach) and camping there over night…the island is yours! There are lots of places to stay, but you are not obliged with anything…we had a look at one place, but the hut they had for us was literally somewhere we would just get robbed in ten seconds…facing back on to the huts of some dodgy looking fellas…so we went and stayed in the furthest hut place on the island (5/7 minute walk from the main restaurant/bar area) and we paid something like £40 a night each…but we got luxury…great huts, clean, all the amenities…and well looked after…it is up to you really…
Places to see things to do (use one of the main tourist places…they are all linked together and it is very much like organised chaos…think our defence two years ago!)
Bay View Resort – Accomodation Luxury
Maya Beach Overnight Camping (very loosely on the camping, passing out on the beach is more viable) – Experience
Snorkelling Speed Boat Trip – Experience
You are really alone on Maya Beach...

Krabi is nice, there was an outdoor market one evening (the only evening) I was there for...really very very friendly and all locals which is a nice change to all the other places you have mentioned.
One question, is it not rainy season there now?

It will be the height of the monsoon, but possibly more so on one coast than another.
Do some research into:-
a) which side of the peninsula will be wettest/driest
b) what there is to do on which island.
If you're there for a while:-
- Koh Phang Nan (sp?) has the famous full-moon party. Boat-ride from Koh Samui, IIRC
- Koh Lanta is an up-and-coming island which still has some 'old Thailand' (although this may already be out-of-date
- If you want culture / interaction rather than just beach, try and get to Chiang Mai.

Isn't Thailand closed in July ?
I'd attempt to book before turning up on Phi Phi, otherwise you're left with the scraps. This was going back some years though.
Put all the clothes on your bed you'll be taking, then take half of them.
Take some rehydrating salt powder stuff.
Avoid English people, there's enough of those in England.
