Young girl I work with is off to the airport in a few hours, going to meet her fiancee who's been posted in Australia, she's excited, but never travelled alone.

I told her to be polite and ask if there is any chance of an upgrade, but I guess the chances are slim right?

Any tips or tricks? She's a lovely girl, if I were a guy on the desk she'd be sitting on the captains lap, but I guess another woman may think differently...

What he said ^^^^

It just doesn't happen nowadays, not unless you're a top-tier member of the airline's reward programme, and even then, it's rare.

Zero percent chance if you just silently hope. Minus 100 percent if you actually ask.

It's easy, just pay the difference and they do it no problem. Or pray it's overbooked and be a fully tiered up member of their loyalty scheme

Virgin upgrade is pretty much every flight ATM...
however we're a big customer. and also have the centurion card so guess it's part of the deal. pays for itself in upgrades tbh

Ignore all the previous advice.

Tell her to do the following:

1. Wear a vey brief gold silk bikini teamed with stilettos and topped with a floor-length mink coat.
2. Approach the check-in desk and announce loudly "do you know who I am?"
3. Open mink coat while saying "I hear this is the best airline for the mile-high club. Please would you seat me next to the bar in First Class"

Happy trails.

I turned up for an economy flight dressed in a smart suit and with just carry on luggage. I was called out of the queue at check in and given a business class boarding pass and then at boarding the pass was taken off me and I was given a pass that said seat 1A. Hooray! 1st class baby.

It was a Saudi Air Heathrow to Jeddah so no booze and it was a pretty old 747 plus the rest of the seats were taken up by a Sheikh and loads of his kids who ran around the cabin for the whole 7 hour flight. Food was good tho'.

Was that recently? Not sure that trick works anymore.

I did see a chap on a long haul flight (I think Vancouver to LHR) who appeared to have tried it, he was a big chap and looked desperately uncomfortable in economy wearing his suit. (shouldn't laugh, I know)

I've never, ever, got an upgrade, and travel a reasonable amount each year (circa 20-30 flights, nothing compared to some of course), so the people on their annual holiday don't really stand a chance.

I've been upgraded a fair few times. It matters little how you are dressed or how much luggage you carry. The determining factors seem to be your frequent flyer status, the type of ticket you have & if you are travelling alone or with others.

In the absence of frequent flyer status or a full fare ticket, best bet is to ask at check-in if there are doing any deals to upgrade to business. You can sometimes get a cheap deal. By way of example I got 2 of us upgraded from economy to business London-Hawaii for £300 by asking at check in.

Yeah! it was the late 90s. I did the trip a few times and did manage to get upgraded to business a couple of times after that but never on the way back. In fact one night they had a replacement 747 that was very old and was all economy. 1st and business class passengers were not too happy but they got 3 seats each towards the front of the plane biggrin

My wife and I were upgraded without asking from Premium Economy to Business Class a few years ago on a BA flight to Boston. We didn't even ask.

I enjoyed the experience so much that I now always look at the Business class fare too see whether I can afford to pay for an upgrade.

I got upgraded to Club World coming back to LHR from Haneda two weeks back. Choosing me seemed utterly random. Obviously I'm extremely handsome, but other than that I had no loyalty cards, no smart clothes, nothing. Mind you BA then tried to poison me with a sausage on the full English breakfast that had me parked on the bog for half an hour at Terminal 5 Baggage Reclaim.
