I'm pulling my hair out trying to find a half decent hotel on the coast in Italy - they're all really awful!

If anyone has any gems please post them.

Details are;

- west coast anywhere from Ventimiglia to Rome

- east coast from Rimini to Pescara

- must have excellent hotel restaurant or one near by

- must be on the beach

- no big chains or massive/corporate type hotel, boutique or design would be perfect

For those that know me (or T) feel free to take the piss, for obvious reasons, but please don't tell her - it's supposed to be a surprise.

Forget Pescara - it's pretty horrid. Have you checked out the Ligurian Riviera? Portofino, capallo, San Remo etc - lovely area smile

Cheers. Have spent a fair bit of time around sestri levante so that's out and all I could find up in portofino was the eight hotel which looks naff.

That area would be perfect though.

Check out Kirker Holidays - they often have some nice hotel ideas.

bit left field but you could consider Elba. Stayed there for a couple of nights a few years back - gorgeous. Can't make any specific hotel recs though I'm afraid.

Hi,

when do you plan to leave? I'm asking because it has a fair importance on the reservation process...
On the west coast the best places are in Tuscany, namely Forte dei Marmi and the Orbetello area, especially Punta Ala.
Then if you can stretch to the islands, there's no match for Sardinia and some areas of Sicily, both in term of sea and food.
If you start from this suggestion or have any other ideas I'll be more than happy to help you!

I was about to recommend Forte dei Marmi....I went there for a weekend a few years ago with some friends. Not an English accent to be heard!

Some of our friends stayed here http://www.softlivingplaces.com/hotel_byron/eng/lu... we couldn't stay there because it was full. Not right on the beach but right across the road and they have a beach club.

+- 1 hours drive fro both Ancona and Pescara Airports.

Nice beach , smallish town , nice little restaurants and reasonable prices :

Head up to Montalto (in the mountains about 45 mins by car) , nice buildings , good little restaurants and vineyards
that pour wine out of petrol pumps smile

Would recommend Rapallo, trainline direct into Genoa, Cinque terre immediately to the east. We were there in January about 5 years ago, and was lovely. Don't recommend Portofino unless you have a boat to reach it. The road is a nightmare.

Try using Venere.com to search, it is the Italian Tripadvisor.
