as per title, i'm going to New York for 3 nights in May flying into Newark... last time i went to NY i fly in and out of JFK which dead easy.. airtrain to the Jamaica Center then jump on the underground smile

Newark seems much more complicated and costly, airtrain, normal train(1 per hour!) then underground.. i looked at shared transfers but seems like this takes ages to transfer into manhattan and costs almost the same as a taxi... any thoughts? i land around Saturday lunchtime, fly out to LA on the Tuesday morning if it makes any difference.

Isn't there a fixed price from all the New York airports to Manhattan if you use a yellow cab? It's was $50 when I was last there (5 years ago) and it's by far the easiest way.

The fixed price for a taxi was still $50 when I went Newark to Downtown Manhattan last June. You can share shuttle buses for cheaper than that, I don't think I could be bothered with the hassle of public transport after a transaltantic flight when the difference in price for your own taxi is less than £25.

Train to Penn Station. No idea of the actual frequency, but the driverless monorail that connects between terminals goes to the main-line station at the airport. Never had to wait more than a few minutes for a train to arrive that goes to Penn Station - maybe I've just been lucky but it's a mainline station into New York. Make sure you stay on the train to Penn Station New York (which is underground) as it also can stop at Penn Station Newark (which is overground). I've seen a few folks get off there by mistake when they see the Penn Station signs.

All road transport options can get terribly held up at the Holland Tunnel (or whatever other way they choose to go), and the train is around half an hour so easly the quickest way in.

Taxi is quite expesive. Dial 7 http://www.dial7.com/ will work out cheaper in the long run and the service is very good. (I have not affiliation BTW)

I do this too - it's pretty cheap.

Another one for above.. NJ Transit trains are cheap and stress free.
The money saved on cabs can be spent on booze and a nice meal instead!

There is no fixed fare like there is from JFK ($45+tip).
Fare from EWR is a lot higher than JFK, whether metered or agreed price.
If you dont fancy the train pre-book a car. Dial 7 I have used reasonably often and they are fine and pretty reliable.

Cheapest way is airtrain to the NJ transit station then NJ transit to either NY Penn if you are going to midtown, or to Newark Penn and then get the PATH train if you are going downtown.
The NJ transit trains are a LOT more frequent than 1 per hour (that will be the amtrak or acela service you were looking at) - i have family in princeton, so use that route a lot and its reliable and cheap.

I hate EWR with a passion, in part due to being such a pain to get to/from the city vs JFK.

What's quite nice is that it's on the mainline, so if you're a railroad geek you get to see fully loaded freights roaring through with absolutely enormous trains behind them.

I haven't done the journey for many years, but I used to get a local taxi to the PATH station in Hoboken. The main benefit of doing that was I didn't have to queue for the tunnel in a taxi

When I was there in December I used this:
http://www.coachusa.com/olympia/ss.newarkairport.a...
It worked very well; obvious yellow buses that pick up outside the airport terminal, and make three stops in Manhatten. We caught a bit of traffic through the tunnel, but I was pleased for the price. Took about an hour I think.

Another vote for a train to Penn station, quite a frequent service, cheaper, more comfortable and quicker than a taxi.

We did the train too. Plenty of space and much chepaer than a cab. Knowing the journey time also made it less stressful; on the way in from JFK we got stuck for 90 mins due to roadwork.

Yep, plenty of room and IIRC there's lifts to the platform.

Nj transit trains are the way to go. It doesn't take long to get there and the trains have space for suitcases.

Coming out of manhatten I bought my ticket and asked the lady which platform to go to, she said the next one is in a couple of minutes and it was platform 12 or something.

Caught the train and it was going great guns until the conductor said we don't go to the airport and I had to get back to penn and then start again. Luckily the next train was only a couple of minutes away. The conductor on that train couldn't do enough to help me though and he advised changing at secaucus. I then caught the right train to get to the airport.

Word of warning though do not get caught at secaucus with a full bladder. I had to get let out of the platform area into the main concourse after explaining the situation to about three coppers. I then had to do the same to get back in.

I should probably not of had three beers and left it a bit late to catch the 1st train but it all worked out in the end.

Taxi from EWR to Manhattan, don't expect much change from $100. As has been mentioned on here, get the air train from the airport to Newark International Airport railroad station, then take one of the many NJ Transit trains to Penn Station. Cost is $12.50 which includes the air train fare, buy your ticket from the airport machines before getting on the air train. The trains are usually double-decker with plenty of space around the vestibules for suitcases. Much cheaper and quicker than a taxi.
