Hi Guys,

I am planning a trip to Florida and I am looking to hire a Mustang soft top, pick up Orlando, drop off Miami. The travel agents do not guarantee the actual type of car so I could end up with an equivalent to the mustang. Does anyone know of a car hire company where I can actually state which car I would like?

Many thanks

Dave

There are a lot of threads on this as it's continuously discussed.

As above, if you want a basic spec Mustang, then Hertz guarantee them. If you want a proper V8 then use the Adrenaline Collection from Hertz.

I've had a mustang twice in Florida

A coupe from Hertz (guaranteed) and a convertible from Dollar (said mustang or similar)

The thing with Dollar is you pick your car, so I arrived to 5 mustang convertibles in a row and could pick colour/spec

I could have just been lucky but seems like the 'or similar' doesn't exist.

Interesting, I tried the hertz website and it says all the adrenaline cars are booked during my dates in June. May be worth me contacting them direct. I will take a look at the Dollar company too.

I would just caution that Florida is very flat, the roads are straight and wide and there are plenty of traffic cops around, so do not imagine that you will get much of a chance to deploy all that bhp.

Dosen't surprise me, its seems that you have to book months in advance to secure one of these cars.

I don't think that they have many in the Florida area so they get booked up quite quickly.

I don't think the website lets you book one way Adrenaline rentals any more. You may have to phone them for that.

Avis do Camaro SS's and Corvette's, so maybe try them if Hertz doesn't work out?

Avis do Mustang convertibles. I booked one specifically for my honeymoon last September. I booked mine through the avis uk website and had no problems. Don't expect to get much luggage in the boot though-we ended up chucking our bags in the back seat.

I'm getting around in an Avis V6 Mustang at the moment. It's not very fast, it takes a whole 5 seconds to get to 60mph, but that will have to do. When I picked the car up there was a fair few mustangs besides my one. Get the V8, it's brill, but the V6 is ok too.

Just mentioned this on another post. Best book your Avis car from the UK, that way all the insurances are in place, the US prices often don't include the insurance. If you're flying BA then book Avis via their website for better deals. Join the Avis Preferred scheme before you book for added benefits i.e. two drivers. I had a Mustang last year from Avis.

Right, finally getting somewhere. I have available a Mustang, just the V6 cab, or a cab Corvette. I like the idea of the corvette but am a little worried about the boot being too small. Has anyone tried one?

Thanks

Not in my experience, I've had all three of the cars in this class, Mustang, Camaro and Charger. The V8 versions are usually equipped with better suspension, larger rims (makes a huge difference) etc. The V6 versions are often wallowy and handle a bit like barges.

As a random point... The FlyerTalk forums are very useful for car rental questions (especially in the US). http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/hertz-423/

Brilliant thanks, very handy. Will measure up tonight!

I am slightly inclined to just take the V6 mustang as we will just cruise around and have plenty of room in the car. But the corvette looks quite a fun experience.

I didn't notice any handling issues with the V6 mustang, I drove everywhere on straight roads. The only fun was at traffic lights, where full throttle was always used, otherwise it had problems keeping up with the traffic.
