At last it seems that the euro is going down against the pound, currently at around 1.20, if it carries on like this (which it surely must? ) think I might get the tent out for the occasional foray to la belle France this year.

It's been at this rate for months. Remenber that it was at around €1.55/£ about 3 years ago, so it's still very strong.

Not sure it was. Last time I recall getting a good rate was around 2002-ish when we were cgetting 1.45. It's been 1.2-ish and below for a very long time. It was 1.125 on the High St last October.

Worth bearing in mind, too, that everything in Europe is far more expensive than it is here in Tesco - very easy to spend 100 Euros just on food for a week self-catering.

Long-term I expect the rate to remain below €1.30 commercially (so at best €1.25 retail), unless the Euro-zone really does implode in the near future.

Realistically that's a top-end forecast, too...

While interest rates remain high in mainland Europe and low in the UK the exchange rate will continue to be poor, and as I don't go to Europe I would rather have my mortage payments low than a good euro to pound exchange rate.

Euro interest rates (including mortgage rates) are lower than those in the UK for GBP.
