Do people think bringing a set of these back in hand luggage will be ok:

Or will it end up with the rubber glove treatment in a side room?

I'd be tempted to tell them what you have at check-in- but I think they'd want you to put those in hold luggage. When I was travelling to/from the states post 9-11 I often brought back random bits of electronics gear that might look 'dodgy' if you weren't a geek- I always told them about it when I checked in and a couple of times they'd ask me for a closer look then put a tag on it to say it had been inspected. Never had any probs with it going in the hold.

i wouldn't worry about it, just make sure you have the paperwork in case they are curious to check. being based in the sandpit, most petrolheads here bring in all sorts of stuff [largest recent one being a gearbox in hand luggage!] with no issue.

You'll be fine. They may want to have a closer look after the x-ray machine, but you'll have no issues.

I managed to get a new (empty) Nitrous bottle in my hand luggage coming out of Miami on the one year aniversary of 9/11.

I also managed to bring a full Painless wiring kit back out of Chicago as hand luggage, although Idid get pulled to one side and had a chat with the guard about that one, he asked what the hell all the wires were and was happy when I showed him the bill of sale and told him it was for a hot rod I was building.

Smile, be happy, and you ought to be ok.

Cheers for the replies. The issue I've got is that it's the Father in law bringing it back.. I don't think he'll put up much of a fight if they start asking questions and will just leave it behind!

Sounds like it will all be ok though.. will give it a go!
