Due to an upcoming business trip, I am goimg to be able to pop into new York city on a sunday in a couple of weeks before the working week starts.

So if you had not a huge amount money to spend, and a day to look around, what woukd you recommend?

If you have never been to NYC before definitely the Circle Line.....failing that just walk around it's a brilliant city for just happening across places. Stay away from midtown because e it's pretty much like any other generic city....if you've seen Leicester Sq or Picadilly Circus you've seen Time Sq pretty much....

If you're Walking around Stay south of 14st street and you'll see the much more interesting and eclectic side of New York....it's a fantastic city. South of 14th are Greenwich Village, Soho, Tribeca, East Village, Lower East Side etc and also Ground Zero.

There are some great museums though....The Met, MoMa, Guggenheim etc...they're all up in midtown or around Central Park

2nd the above (particularly Greenwich village - very cool), + take the walk across Brooklyn bridge (a lot of people dont seem to realise there is a foot path over the top of the bridge) - when you get to the other side, head left to the riverside park so you can take the classic NYC picture

Oh and the cheapest tourist ride you can do in NYC is to take the Statten Island ferry....just don't get off!

I think Circle Line is still running now - it has sailed past my place on the Hudson three times today already. Anyway the price is pretty expensive.

My suggestion of cheap weekend:
- get a metrocard and teach yourself how to use the subway. Fairly simple and inituitive for a pistonhead type...maybe not women...
- get the staten Island ferry from battery park and sail it out to Staten Island, past Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. When you get there, get off the ferry and walk back around to the waiting room to catch the same ferry back. On the way back, stand up the front to see how the Manhattan skyline grows up out of the water.
- Brooklyn bridge is a must
- Wandering along Broadway (or the back streets) of Soho for the shops, people watching, etc.
- For upmarket people watching just stroll along Fifth Ave between Central Park and Saks Fifth Ave. What a cross section of society - has beens, wanna bees, never-will-bees, etc.
- There is usually a street market of some kind each weekend. Google is your friend here.
- walk the high line park. This was the old elevated train tracks converted into a park. Great views of the city and some fascinating old history.

The secret to Manhattan is walking. It rewards just exploring around - you never know what you will find.

If the weather is obliging Empire State and top of the rock will be open for some great views, could probably fit one in as well as the suggestions above
