My missus has just won 3 night's stay at the Hyatt Hotel in Amman in a work raffle, which looks lovely. So all we need do is get the flights and the spending money, so thinking about a long weekend in September and having maybe another day night there.

So apart from visiting Petra on a day excursion, what's it like there? How is Jordan/Amman generally?

I know if we go in September/October it won't be too hot, but hot enough from my experience of being in Southern Israel at that time of year.

In my view you should look outside Amman.

You could try a night in one of the hotels on the Dead Sea on the way back from a night in a tented hotel in the desert further south where you will be able to tread in the footsteps of TE Lawrence.

That kinda defeats the object of getting the 5 star hotel free for three nights, but I see where you're coming from. smile

Is it feasible to take a trip out to the Wadi Rum desert? Stunning by all accounts.

You could spend a few hours there - ay 5pm till 9 or 10pm, and then retire to your 5 star hotel. That's what I did when i stayed at Aqaba.

If you are staying in Amman then definitely take a trip to the citadel and amphitheater, there is a cool little museum at the citadel site and it's all worth a visit.

Agree with this. The museum looks like nothing from the outside, but it has some fascinating stuff on display. Even my wife, who's not normally interested by such things, had a few "wow!" moments. We only went there because she was looking for a place to pee while we were visiting the citadel.smile

Jerash isn't too far from Amman if memory serves me right. It's certainly worth a trip, as the Roman ruins are pretty impressive.

Cheers, a quick Google image and map shows they indeed look impressive and less than an hour away too. smile

I suppose it depends what your main aim is. If it's just to spend 3 nights in a 5 star then OK - go to Jerash, it's nice day out. But if you think you might not go to Jordan again then skip Jerash (there are similarly good sites in Syria and Lebanon)and do the Dead Sea and Wadi Rum. I guess you could just spend a day at the Dead Sea and return to Amman in the evening. We stayed at the Movenpick. And if you're not going to return then Wadi Rum is a good trip but you should try and stay in an encampment.

We stayed next door at the Edom.
The folk are friendly enough in Jordan, A trip to Madaba past Mount Nebo to the Dead sea is a must, amazing scenery and freakishly weird having a float,
Petra if you can then do it, it will be a long day to go walk round then return so maybe try and find digs for a night,
Didnt spend that long in Amman (6-8 hours) so cant comment on the City.
