We're thinking of going to Munich in March, and wondered if anyone had any tips?

Most specifically, I'm not sure how much time we should spend there. We're considering staying for 3 nights, but I'm not sure if that'll be enough.

Also, tips on where to go would obviously be great. I'm basically only wanting to go there because it's a city I'm keen to go to, though have no real idea as to what I'd want to do there.

Travel tips would also be good; most specifically travelling to the centre (near/to our hotel) from MUC airport. It looks like we could get a day pass for 20 euros for the both of us, which would get us to the hotel fine. I doubt there's any other ways of doing it, but thought I'd ask. Taxi I imagine would cost a fortune.

Food/drink tips would be ideal, as I'd like to get a true experience of german food. In Berlin last year, we didn't really experience it as much as I'd have liked, as my partner is quite food risk-averse; so tips for 'safe' food would be good.

Thanks!

Get the 3day pass at the ticket desk opposite the rail escalators at the airport. That way you can use the trains, trams and underground if needed. Train is best from the airport. Taxi is about 50 euros. I try and avoid the traditional food when I am there but can look up some places when I am back in the office on Monday

Edited to add: if you want a traditional Bavarian place for food here is a place that's quite famous: http://www.kuchelverzeichnis.de/portal/cms/front_c...

Who you flying with and where is your hotel?

If flying Lufthansa you will go into T2 (dedicated for Star Alliance). Last two times I flown into there the first entry to the baggage collection was shut, but keep walking and you'll come across the second (you are mingling with the departure crowd at this point, so walk past the security checks on your left, a bit further is the second entrance!). When you come out of there, the trains are straight on. It looks as though you are going outside, but there is actually a roof up there! Walk through the square, and down the escalators to the trains (S-Bahn).

If flying any other airline you will likely land at T1. When you come out of baggage collection, go down the escalator in front of you and follow the signs for S-Bahn.

You can buy tickets from the machines (they have English menus too). When you have bought a ticket, don't forget to validate it in a little stamping machine - without doing this your ticket is not valid. If I remember, the stamping machine are blue (or could be red!) with a little green light on them to show they are working. There are a couple on the platform (one right at the bottom of the escalator if coming in from T2, so don't panic!).

There are two trains that depart from Munich airport - the S1 and the S8. The S8 enters the city via the Ostbahnhof (East end of city centre), whilst the S1 goes in via the Hauptbahnof (West end of the city centre). Depending on where your hotel is will depend on which train will be quickest, although if the S1 is about to depart, then it will probs end up being the same as the S8 to the centre, and vice versa. As said above, the three day ticket is probably your best bet as you can then use the S-Bahn (suburban railway), U-Bahn (underground), or buses for your entire trip (as well as having your ticket back to the airport ready purchased!).

To help you plan the train - try http://efa.mvv-muenchen.de/mvv/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?... - should tell you which trains to get, where to change (if needed), and the times.

Regarding food - no idea! I visit my sister so generally go to the outskirts. However, a visit to the Hofbrauhaus can't be missed - very touristy, but a lot of locals also go here for their breakfast beer and sausage (no, seriously!), and the food ain't half bad too!

Its a great place to be, so go enjoy (and don't forget BMW Welt!). Don't know your dates, but from the 7th to 11th March this year is the 'Starkbierfest' - Strong Beer Festival - You have to partake - would be rude not to!

Our company HQ is in Munich, agree with the 3 day pass, go to the desk as the ticket machines never work. BMW museum is a must and book the restaurant on the top floor.

Olympic park next door.

Thanks everyone that has posted so far! To answer (and ask) some questions...

We're flying with EasyJet - It was just too cheap not to! (£99 for two of us, return!)

We're staying on Arnulfstrasse, so right by that Hauptbahnhof Central Station - ideal! We went for 3 nights in the end.

Looking at this map, the S1 would be slightly quicker, but we'll not worry too much!

Where can we buy the ticket for the trip back to the airport?

The 3-day ticket appeals, but it would work out expensive as we'd need to get the one where it includes the airport boundaries. We tend to walk when we go on holiday, so would likely just get the two 20 euro tickets either end of the break. Or am I being stupid?

BMW Welt is on the list, though I've not looked into it yet. Olympic Stadium is also definitely on there!

We're going from 17th-20th March. Not sure if there is anything going on at that time...?

Thanks for all the tips!

To be fair, the City Tour Card 3-day partner ticket is only €51.50, so only a little more expensive than two day tickets, and includes a lot of discounts for museums etc, including BMW Museum, City sightseeing tours etc etc - have a quick look at http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/static_languages/en/hom...

Worth doing IMO, as it would be a lot easier for getting around the museums if you only have limited time. Even if you don't use the transport on day 2, you get some discounts which will offset the extra cost. You get the discounts on the 1-day cards too, but only for that day.

ETA - if you don't buy the 3-day, then you can buy return ticket at any S-Bahn station - they have machines (that DO work (IME), just they can get confusing!!).

Second edit - that map doesn't show a LOT of stops (on both lines!). To be fair, either train will probs take the same amount of time - use the link I posted earlier and it will tell you the best one to get smile

Trouble with the 3-day card is that we're there for 4 days, so unfortunately it wouldn't even get us back to the airport on the last day (Saturday arrival, Tuesday departure). Shame, as that would definitely appeal; especially with the discounts for BMW Welt, etc.

BMW Welt is free - just the museum to pay for (which is much more interesting!). Didn't realise you were there for four days.... Hmmmm.... In that case, keep the two singles for the two airport days, and buy a 3-day innenraum card for €22.80 (but no discounts etc) or the 3 day city card for €29.90 (plus you get your discounts) to cover the other two days smile

Or as you say, you could walk. But if the weather is cold, wet/snowy, windy... you may decide not to, so good to know that you have options. Btw, the 1-day city card is €16.90 so could be a good option for you on the BMW day - otherwise you may have a lot of walking to do!

I reckon we'll do the BMW Museum as well, but we'll see at the time. Not sure how much it costs, but would you say it's worth it?

Weather-wise, I was thinking if the weather is really bad, we'll either just buy a pass for the other days, or do the far away stuff on the days we have passes (2 of out 4 days).

Looks like BMW is less than 3 miles away from our hotel, so pretty easy going walking, but depends how much discount you get with the travel card!

The museum is normally €9 each, but the city card gives you a €3 reduction, so you save €6 overall. And yes, I think its worth it (depending on how much you like BMW's anyway!)

Download http://www.citytourcard-muenchen.com/cms/upload/pd... for more information about what discounts it gives you.

So you could do that, the Olympiapark and the Bier & Oktoberfest Museum, and save €11 overall, throw in something like the Planetarium (another €5 saving) and you've pretty much got your money back, and not wasted a couple of hours walking smile

Lots to think about for you anyway.

I love the Englischer Garten. You can't beat the schweinshaxe, but my mate says you can only eat two in a lifetime or you'll die from a massive heart attack!

Last time I went, half the group went to the BMW museum and said it was good. The rest of us got a train out to Dachau - not exactly a fun day out but I felt it is something I had to experience.

Englischer Garten tops the TripAdvisor list, so it is definitely on the list of things to do! What did you find so good about it?

Schweinshaxe is also very much on the list, and I've picked out a few places where I could try it!

Thanks for this! Hofbrauhaus was already on the list, and looks pretty good (if a bit touristy?). Dachau is probably a bit far out for the time we've got there, though it does look interesting. I should say that we're both not that into history though, so anything that is popular due to it's historical nature very much depends on what it is.
