We've been waiting for a hell of a long time for this trip but have decided to go!
We would like a car for the entire 6 weeks and the cheapest I coud find is a Chevvy Aveo for £2386 for 6 weeks! Bit steep like.
Any cheaper place to hire a car? thanks!

It will be expensive because of the one way fees (do make sure quotes you get either include this, or explicitly state they are not required). I would not be going that far in something that small either!

You might find you're better off swapping cars along the way.

Also make sure you hunt out discount codes/offers, and use Quidco!

Massive premium for the long-distance one-way element I would guess?

Maybe try splitting it into legs and swapping cars over as you travel - it might work out cheaper. It did for us when we went from Las Vegas to San Francisco. We did two bookings: LAS - Tahoe and Tahoe - SFO and it worked out cheaper than a straight booking LAS - SFO. This was with Hertz.

My Sister and a friend done this trip about 5 years ago, they bought a car for $1500 and then sold it when they got to LA before flying home. They got most of their money back and it only broke down once and it was something minor that only cost around a $100 to fix.

Over £2000 for car hire seems like a serious waste of money, I would have thought that there would be specific companies offering much better deals for longer term rentals like this.

But how much did your sister pay for insurance?
For someone driving on an international license who doesn't live in the states the insurance can be quite high.
