Dive bars! McSorley's, Nancy Whiskey's, Jimmy's (run by an ex-heavyweight boxer) and Milady's to name but a few.

Oh and do the Highline. An elevated railway line turned into a park.

This chap be-eth prophetic.

I go to NYC about every 7weeks or so, for a whopping 40 hours, stay at the JW MARRIOTT Brooklyn Bridge. My arrival time at the hotel is about 8pm, always have a table booked for 9. Wonderful place. It's a little slice of heaven, casual, loud, historic.

If you're there at Christmas get down to the Rockerfeller Center for the Ice Skating. Very pretty.

The High Line Park, if it's open. Good views of the Hudson and a really nice place to people watch.

If you can afford it, go see a Knicks game at MSG! By far and away the best thing we did when we sent this year. And, neither me or the Mrs have any remote interest in Basketball!
Seriously though, I can't recommend it enough, the atmosphere, the sense of occasion - you know how over the top yanks do everything? Well it really adds to the occassion.
It wasnt very cheap though is the only down fall. I think our tickets worked out at about £100 for the both of us. On top of that there are foam fingers, programs, Beer - $9 a pint! but you do get a plastic cup to take home as a souvenir.
I got our tickets off ebay if its of any help but you can also buy them on ticketmaster and the like.
Another friend of ours is going over xmas and they're off to the game on xmas day. I'm properly jelous!

Enjoy!

I drove from Niagara to NYC last year (I have a chum who owns a vineyard near NF). NF is pretty cool - Best views from the Canadian side best experience on the US side (surprisingly it is a lot less naff!!).

DC is about 2.5 hours by express train from Penn Station (I did NYC to Baltimore by train last year - tickets are very expensive)

Brilliant, I'd love to do New York but it doesn't strike me as a "solo traveller" type destination. Will watch thread for inspiration...

I did 6 days in New York last March. It was a stag do for 3 days and as I had never been before I stayed another 3 and did the tourist thing on my own. Really enjoyed it.

You'd be surprised - I worked there for 6 months and was pretty much on my own at weekends as the locals would go home - Women love an English accent and there's plenty to see/do that doesn't require holding hands.....
