Hi smile

Am looking towards booking a S. American holiday with a small specialist company - expect it to be in the region of £5000.
I can pay by credit card with a 2% fee attached to the bill - which would be approx £100. If I paid by debit card there wouldn't be a surcharge.
Paying by c/card would give me protection in the event the holiday company went bust - but my query is can you get alternative, cheaper insurance against such an occurrence?
I was going to go with the travel companies favoured travel insurance provider but the brochure doesn't list the details so can't see if the company going bust would be covered.
You might wonder why book with a travel company that you think might go bust - I don't really think it would, it's just a small specialised S. American company that has the sort of mix of trips and flexibility that I want.
Any ideas?

Mark.

Can't help with the specific question, but have you told them you don't want to pay the surcharge? Each time I get told I have to pay one I tell them I don't want to and pretend I can take my business elsewhere and I'd say 7 or 8 times out of ten they drop the charge.

Appreciate it'll be a bit different for you because of the specialist nature - but worth a try?

IIRC you used to be able to do part payment by CC and the rest by another means and the total purchased item was effectively insured by the CC payment. Providing the CC payment was above the 'claim' threshold (£100).

You may need to consult with your CC company to see if this still applies.

Check if the company is ATOL or AITO bonded. If they are your money is protected if they do go bust.

It's ATOL protected, also has IATA, LATA and AITO accreditations. I'll make sure I'm insured for the eventuality, whether it be c/card or general travel insurance - this is going to be 'my holiday of a lifetime' so don't want it ending badly. However, don't want to be paying double for something that might already be covered.

I could ask about removing the surcharge - but doubt that would work as it is a specialist company that allows add on trips ie in my case - 5 or 7 day cruise round Galapogos islands, tour of Ecuador, Peru and Machu Pichu then a trip into the Amazonian jungle.

I don't think it will go bust - it was just I thought other people would have come up against this scenario and wondered what they did.
