Hi,

Off to New York on Thursday, flying in to JFK, anyone know the best way to get to Manhattan (Staying on 35th Street).

Was thinking of getting a cab, any ideas of the cost?

Cheers

Much better than the Subway or the Bus though. Make sure to get in a Crown Vic while you can.

I heard you can get a limo company for the same price as a cab, (and you'll actually get some legroom as opposed to being in a Crap Vic... might be worth checking out... I've done the Subway once- at night- it was about as much fun as a kick in the head (with the threat you might actually get one)...

Yep. I normally pay $50 (I believe that's the hourly rate), plus tip of course. It's worth the small amount extra for not sitting in a grotty old crown vic. Normally get an Escalade or Lincoln Town car and a friendly driver.

If it's your first time you really should have a go in a Crown Victoria, st though they may be. Now they're out of production it'll only be a couple of years before they're replaced with Nissan vans. frown

Worth noting that whilst the fee from JFK is fixed by law the return journey is not, so I don't know how much they charge ?

It seems there is a bus transfer to a subway station from JFK, I think its about $15 to Manhattan all told ?

+111111 for all the suggestions to get a limo.

After a long haul flight and half an hour at immigration you will experience deep joy exiting arrivals and seeing a man holding a card with your name on it and who then takes your bags and drives you to your hotel door in a luxury limo.

Cost me $75 + $10 tip last time I was in NY with

http://nyclimousine.com/

and worth every cent.

Book before you leave and they'll be waiting for you. Free waiting time of 45 minutes after you land.

Shared ride shuttles are great value - as long as you aren't the last one dropped off

£30 for around an hour in a taxi seems quite reasonable to me.

Nothing to add really except that if you contact your hotel and ask them for a price for a car service they should be able to get you a better rate with one of the providers they use. for the going rate for pick up only the driver met us in the terminal and carried our bags.

Subway is very good but a bit of an arse when you've got bulky cases.

Air tram + subway 'E' train will take you to Penn Station on 8th/34th in about 20 minutes for about $15.

Flat $45 rate applies to and from JFK.
Worth noting that depending on time of day/nite its often cheaper on the meter. Regardless of flat fare or metered, the taxi rider has the right to dictate the route. To avoid tolls just say 'take the bridge please' or similar, which should bring it to a nice round $50 with tip.

Hmm ok thanks, everything I've read so far said the return journey wasn't fixed fare.

If you do decide to get a fixed price taxi from JFK, be sure to ignore all the touts hanging around the exit. Just cross over the road, get in the queue and the dispatcher will take care of you.
