Go into a shop, buy a PAYG phone, and get an international calling card to go with it (they should sell them too). That should give you an 800 number to call to make the call, which should make it pretty cheap.

May vary from province to province, but in BC you can get a Rogers prepaid sim (what they call payg) for $50, which includes $20 of call credit. Can top it up with a cc from the handset.

I got hit hard with roaming charges there - £300 for minimal use (took a couple of short calls and rang ahead to hotels). Definitely find a rogers or similar (one in Toronto airport from memory, otherwise there are plenty dotted around Toronto itself).

You can buy a SIM card from Fido, I did this when I first emmigrated and it was about $70-80 for a decent amount of texts, data and calls. You want "CityFido" PAYG.
