I'm looking to take my wife away for 3 nights over the August bank holiday and not having been to York before am thinkking about heading there. Can anyone recommend a decent (but not too expensive) hotel within reasonable walking distance of where we'd need to go and also with parking?
Also, what are the must do/sees and restaurants, cafes etc?

Thanks for that - I'll check them out when I get a spare moment. We want something we can drive into and park securely but be able to walk into the centre and main attractions. As for food, dinner wise it would be English/French, lunchtime nice bistros or cafes. Again, nice but not overly expensive so decent gastropub or restaurant rather than michelin starred fine dining.

I always think this place looks nice, it's very central too (but maybe a little over budget?)

Try www.best-hotels-prices.com. Uses hotel data from all the main booking sites in one comparison site, with reviews..saves time basically

A couple of years ago since we went to York, but we had dinner in Nineteen. Just picked it at random, but it was very decent.

I stayed in Hotel Noir a few weeks ago. It's a short walk from the Shambles (about 10 minutes max). It's a nice little hotel with 4-poster beds, a free minibar and nice staff. Not too expensive either.

Did you really walk everywhere, you say it's fairly central but was it only a short walk to both the minster and to the Viking Centre.....?

I didnt say it was a short walk anywhere. We didnt visit either of the places you have mentioned. I also said we walked pretty much everywhere, not absolutely everywhere! We got a cab a few times when we were eating out etc and also to the ferry to the Statue of Liberty as we were on a tight schedule.

I think walking about it the best way to see New York, yes its knackering but i personally thing its better way to get to see bit you would miss if you just got cabs to the tourist stuff.

Thankyou for the advice, thought I should clarify though it's York, England not New York, USA.
