I must be blind but I can't find the thread I started on Kefilonia a while back.

Looking for any more do's and dont's as we are off next Sunday, staying at Old Skala, what about good food, bad food, best places to eat etc.

Many thanks.

Andy.

Melissani Lake is well worth a visit - I was fortunate enough to dive it when I lived there...

Interestingly, there are a number of underground lakes/caves in that area but have not been open to the public.

Drogarati Cave is also quite a spectacular sight...if I recall around 40m underground, amazing stalactites and was once used as a concert venue.

Just in case you can check this thread from holiday, I've been to Skala and the island a few times, most recently last month, and can recommend the following:

Good places to eat in Skala - the Pines at the very bottom of the high street on the left is very good. Plus there's a hotel with a brick veranda set back from the road if you go the bottom of the high street, turn left and walk for 100-200 metres. They do fantastic fresh fish and good food.

Good places to visit: I can second the recommendation of the caves - they're both really superb and not very commercialised (well, compared to Wookey Hole anyway!). The tallest mountain (whose name escapes me) offers some great views, and also exciting driving if you ignore the hire company's rules about off road use (I didn't tell you that!). The view from the highest point you'll get a 2WD car are stunning (don't attempt to go further - I did and had to do the dodgiest three point turn I've ever done when I got the thing stuck). The monastery in the centre isn't often open to the public, but if it is it's a lovely old building and well worth a look. There's also a vineyard nearby which isn't much to visit, but you can taste the wine and it's very tasty and a good place to get presents (although its sold all over the island). The castle/fort thing is pretty good too - a nice walk around the walls and great views over the island.

If you like snorkeling, then head down to the beach and turn right and keep going till you reach the rocks that divide the main beach from the nudist area. The rocks stretch out into the sea and the snorkeling's pretty decent there (for the Greek Islands anyway).

HTH.

Agree with you about the Pines, best we found was the Old Skala Taverner, service a tad slow when busy though.

Hired a 4x4 and had great fun on all the off-road tracks, found three different ways up to the top, most tracks are very easy but there are a few that are quite demanding.

Seemed to be quite dear where every you went, sorry thought the caves and lake was a bit of a waste of time.

Enjoyed our time out there overall and the time went quite quickley, very hot and sunny, a must is A/C in the villa's and go for a 4x4.

Andy.

yes I must admit, I haven't bothered with the caves on either of my return visits to the island. They are good though if you've never been before. Regarding air con, I've managed fine without it in July, although I must admit like/tolerate the heat and don't mind sleeping without anything covering me. The friend I went with this year said she found it very hard to sleep on the warmer nights, so I guess how essential air con is depends on the individual.

We did`nt bother on paying extra for air con in the apartment we stayed in last Sept, and just used the ceiling fan and kept the window open. The only problem was the mossies that are abundant on the island and had to buy repellant which is expensive locally.
