I was thinking about driving to Holyhead and getting the ferry with the car. Whats it like driving in Ireland? Is it safe? are the roads ok? decent friendly hotels with good parking? Any ideas or route ideas would be great.

What direction are you thinking of going when you've landed in Ireland?

Dublin, Radisson Blu St Helens Hotel, good and secure. Park car and take bus/cab into city centre.

South from Dublin via Wicklow Mountains, to say Kilkenny or Waterford or Dungarvan ( Park Hotel oe Lawlors and eat in The Tannery Restaurant )

South to Cork ( Kinsale and or Glandore ), next West to Clare and home.

PM me if you like, I live in Ireland and drive a GT3

Ah great some info.. We are either A) Off to Turkey on 22nd August b) Driving to Switzerland C) Driving to Ireland.

The wife wants Turkey I want to drive ;-)

I have looked on a map wanted to go to Galway but it looks lost on that coast! The G hotel seems nice.

Will delve further into your recommendations. If we are passing will ping you a message and meet for a coffee as you say.

If you want a driving holiday Switzerland all day every day. Less cars, better roads, less car crime (see not about secure parking above from a local), safer roads and some truly memorable driving. Oh and better weather.

I've been to Ireland many, many times and done a lot of driving over there especially between Dublin and The West and in those areas. Ireland on the right day and on the right road is truly stunning....the reality is a lot of the roads are still not what they should be and the weather is a hugely variable.

"Force" wife to go on a driving holiday to Ireland....if you get some bad weather I can see there being some pointed remarks about the holiday destination scratchchin

He 's right about the weather, could be anything, but all of Northern Europe is poor this summer. Our roads are largely good now, lots of potholes though. We have a new motorway east west which means Galway is 2 hrs form Dublin, say 2.30 mins. Northand West of Galway is stunning, but West Cork and Waterford are our secret . Play safe, go to Turkey. Or..........

We could be interested in an Irish road trip too, also doing the Holyhead route over. I have been to Ireland many times for work, taking in County Wicklow, but would love to explore the west coast.

We have a 4 year old boy, so a nice hotel with kids play room and indoor pool would be a bonus. I have taken up fly fishing, so finding some good trout or salmon waters would make my holiday. Finally on the wish list would be a hotel on/near a good beach, so if the weather is OK, paddling, sand castles and kite flying could be on the agenda.

Any recommendations for a week's itinerary and good hotels would be appreciated!!!

Just got back, took a plane in the end and went for a two day jaunt to Northern Ireland, its as beautiful as the South so plan is to drive them both and do a loop.
