Folks,

Still trying to plan the winter odyssey. Flights to Japan are still £600 return, direct, with Virgin Atlantic or BA and it's incredibly tempting.

Is it possible to travel/stay cheaply? Not too bothered about the odd dorm.

These are the cheapest flights I've seen for ages and, whilst I fancy a bit of sun as well, the thought of a few weeks wandering around Japan really excites me.

Absolutely. We can sort you out a couple of nights in Tokyo and there are enough backpackers places elsewhere particularly Kyoto. Things get a lot cheaper the further away from Tokyo you go...

Beer @ nearly 8 quid a pint hurts a bit though!

Thanks Glen! Would be great to have a local guide hehe

I've had a reasonable couple of months at work and the S2000 fund can be raided for holiday purposes, so pretty much decided to go now- Just need to rejig my annual leave slightly and get the flights booked before they go up in price!

It's a bit awkward due to having to book the flights in advance- The cheap fares are very inflexible, so I need to "Nail my colours to the mast" in terms of how long I can afford to go for...

£8 a pint? Ouch. I'll have to stick to ropey sake instead I think.

...And I won't be toying with premium class options... Just had a play and see that First is £3016 one way as opposed to £300 one way. I'll survive the 12 hours in cattle class I think!

Buy the JR rail travel card over here before you go, gives you unlimited travel on JR trains including some of the bullet trains (not the fastest ones though). Seems expensive but works out much cheaper if you are looking to travel around and see stuff.

Thanks, I have been looking at that, since it seems to include buses as well. I'm not convinced it will end up being worthwhile though for the whole period... I seem to recall that some of the passes can be used for days at a time, which definitely would!

It does depend on your usage, I went for either two or three weeks and travelled alot (due to work mainly). It really works out if you are going long distance, Kyoto and old Japan is a great area to see. The exchange rate is terrible at the moment too so everything is expensive there.

Have a great time thumbup

Spent a week in Tokyo working last year, had an amazing time, met Glen etc but you will be completely fine wandering around on your own.

Awesome place and people. He said only having spent the week drinking.

Lost in Translation is one of my all-time favourite films, and having been to Hong Kong last year I think Tokyo would be right up my street too.

To be honest, wandering around seeing new sights and taking in the city is entirely my kind of holiday so I'm looking forward to it. Just need to restrict beer consumption and avoid earthquakes though smile

Good luck with both of those aims: no drinking up time and plentiful taxis mean that stopping drinking at a reasonable time is pretty impossible, and the earthquakes are still happening at a rate of a couple of reasonable ones per week. Here is a picture of last nights: http://www.jma.go.jp/en/quake/3/20110731040357391-...
