Japan holiday destination
Discussion
I am thinking of going to Japan on holiday for a week or so late September / October.
Most probably will spend time in Tokyo and then travel to Kyote. Might go to Hiroshima.
Never been before and just starting to research.
Would welcome any tips (apart from avoid certain nuclear reactors !) - must do places to see, best way to travel, train vs car etc
Thanks

An utterly amazing place! What sort of stuff are you into? I essentially copied the plans from here: http://www.insidejapantours.com/self-guided-japan-... with my own little spin!
Feel free to drop me a PM if you need anything else. Also, I know that a few members are in Japan, so they might be able to help. My advice would be to take in a couple of the main cities and sites and couple off the beaten track. I've been lucky to travel to most corners of the globe and both my wife and I think of our Japan trip and maybe one of the best!

If you are only going for a week - I would recommend you choose either Tokyo of Kyoty/Osaka as each area has so much to offer you really would be loosing out if doing both in the space of a week.
To my taste, I would recommend Kyoto. The pace of the city is not as high as Tokyo and the blend between old style monestaries mixing it with steel, concrete and glass highrisers is even more profound than in Tokyo. Also, it gives you the choice of taking a one day trip to Hiroshima, which I would recommend as a definite place to see before you die, for all people!
If you are more adventurous, then outside Osaka, there is a chance to stay for a night in a traditional monestary, which is also a birthplace for one of the main Japanese religions. Can't remember the name of the top of my head, but a quick google search should help you. Otherwise PM me, and I'll have a rummage around my old itinerary.
And remember to stay at a Ryokan

Investigate a JR Rail pass - buy in this country before departure.
When I went it saved loads of money on 2 long trips (Tokyo to Osaka and back) and then a few shorter trips (Osaka to Kyoto and back, as well as local trains round Tokyo and Osaka).
It gives you free travel on everything on JR apart from the fastest of the Shinkansen bullet trains.
