September. 14 nights. All Inclusive. 5 star.

Which one would you go for?

PS. I'm not considering Cancun itself but somewhere like Playa Carman.

ETA: Found similar deals and resorts for a similar price so budget isn't really an issue.

Any particular reason or just personal preference? Have you been to both?

Been to neither actually! hehe

I just have this thing about Dominican Republic being full of chavs with money. It's probably not the case, and I sound snobby, but it reminds me of Ibiza ten years ago.

Mexico is probably the same, but substitute Americans for Brits (better class of burgers and pizzas!)

If it was me, I'd go to Mexico simply because I think the culture thing would be more interesting.

Cheers. I see where you're coming from.

Anybody else got any input?

Been to both one year after the other, D.R. Just felt like we had people begging and trying to sell us stuff when ever we left the hotel. Everything else was fantastic about the holiday private beach great food, as many rum and cigar sampling nights I could handle but me and the OH just preferred Mexico as we could walk down to cancun centre and walk out side the hotel etc ( we were told not to do this in Dominican )

Overall we felt mexico had everything Dominican offered plus other stuff. Would love to go back to Mexico ASAP, but would probably only go back to dominican if a silly deal came up.

Mexico is much bigger than DR what do you want from your holiday? Lie on a beach for a two weeks and not really leave the hotel, go to pubs/clubs, do activities see a bit of culture etc?

The time would have been that DR would have been quite a bit cheaper than Mexico but from what you’re saying there isn’t much if any difference so that changes things a bit. Mexico is nice; expect it to be busier in general and full of Americans, nice beaches as a rule but busy/non-private in the main part. Lots to do and see in Mexico Mayan Ruins are worth a visit, watersports, water parks etc widely available, I found the resorts to be very Americanised so lots of modern malls for shopping etc.

To a certain degree DR offers all of the above but on a smaller scale, your activities tend to revolve around your hotel more and day trips and depending on where you stay there may not be anything within the immediate vicinity of your hotel. Some nice hotels in DR but very few ‘true 5* if any, quieter beaches and less crowded than Mexico. Shorter flight to DR too. DR has a hotel/resort that is on it’s own private island that I thought looked quite nice, Leventado or something like that.

Depends what you want really I’ve enjoyed holidays to both when I was younger but probably wouldn’t do either now as it’s not my idea of fun/a holiday anymore.

Went here http://www.iberostar.com/EN/Puerto-Plata-hotels/Ib... 8 years ago, booking two days before for little money and it still ranks in our top two or three holidays.

Mexico was pretty good, if a bit forgettable though I suppose

Cuba ?

Mexico of the two though if you want to leave your hotel.

Haven't been to the Dominican Republic, there's always a 'but' when you hear about it.

I got so bored in the DR that I got a few couples together and chartered a light aircraft down to Haiti for a few days. Organised excursions are fine but strictly tourist trail stuff, I wouldn't go back there. It's the cheap arse of the Caribbean. 5* is not that it's 3*+ in most cases.

I've not done Mexico but I can not give DR a thumbs up.

Never been to Mexico, but have stayed in DR.

We wouldn't go back to be honest, our hotel was in a complex of hotels and you could have been anywhere in the world. We got constantly hassled on the beach so we tended to stay by the pool.

The excursions offered were the typical ones you get most places.

There maybe nicer places on the island, but we wouldn't take the risk with our money and go back there. So many other places in the world to visit.

Compare this to Thailand which we would go back to in a heartbeat, genuinely friendly people and an interesting country and culture to explore. Great food as well!

I've been to the Riu Tequila in Playacar, My first all inclusive and probably one of the best holidays i've ever been on. Loads to eat and drink, Nice hotel, loads to do in the area, Loads to eat and drink, Sunshine, Loads to eat and drink, Oh sorry repeating myself there lol.

You will get a few loud mouth arrogant Americans who seem to treat the Mexicans as second rate citizens but the Mexicans love the English, They love you even more when you tip them a couple of bucks.

Cancun is the Benidorm of the area but Playa Del Carmen is lovely.

The Riu we stayed in was part of a large complex of Riu hotels on the same strip and it was great and arguably the best out of the chain of hotels on the strip apart from the 5 star Riu Palace and Riu Mexico but i was told these were a little more stuffy with stuff like dress codes etc.
