Monaco GP 2012 - Where to watch?
Discussion
My Dad celebrates his 70th birthday next year and has decided he wants to be in Monaco for the GP.
Whilst watching this years race on TV he noticed a cruise liner moored in/near the harbour and has tracked it down and booked to be on it next year. Its the Azamara Quest and both my Mum and Dad will pick up the cruise in Nice before working their way around to Monaco.
Dad wants to go ashore for the qualifying and the race so is looking for tickets but where is the best place to watch?
Any recommendations for places to go while there. I know the place will be heavily restricted for the GP but he is an F1 fanatic so anything to do with the sport will interest him no end.
any help/guidance would be great.
Thanks
Kev

Can't help with where to get tickets however he will need some proper entry tickets if he wants to see any of the race. There are very few vantage points where the track can be seen with out.
I have been there by ship during the GP period. There are only a few ship docks, it is more likely they will anchor outside and then tender in. The tenders stop at the cruise terminal and then you can walk around into the town, they'll likely be given some official passes which will gain them entry into the port area and other back of house areas but not the race stands and seating. I was there for the Classic GP, which was a week or two before the F1 GP, I was able to walk around the paddock and get up close to all the old cars.
Great atmosphere but busy and they will need to walk a lot! Maybe check with the cruise line and see if they have an allocation of tickets.

CO2000 - thanks for that link. It helped alot.
TVR.....cheers. Not sure where the ship docks but Dad is keen to get tickets. Also I have sent him some info on the FanVision units and it looks as if he will hire one of these too. That way he'll get the full F1 experience.
Thanks to all for the input.

I went this year and loved every minute, I was in Tribune 'L'. Which is built just over the end of the swimming pool complex, it was good as the track came around from your left and they went straight ahead. On the right you have the view of the pits and thats great for people watching. Its not too expensive if you look around for the cheaper places to eat, we looked in the window of one restaurant and they had a set menu for the Sunday evening for £950pp!!!! We found a suitable one which was £75pp and the food was still fantastic, the atmosphere when the track opened at 6/7pm was electric. There were bar's put up along the harbour side on the track, you've got all the yachts having parties.
Heres a couple of snaps for you;

Managed to snap one of Hamilton proper sideways leaving the chicane.

It used to actually be pretty easy to get tickets....there are quite a few booths in Monaco where you can just walk up and buy tickets. A mate of mine used to live in Monaco...I went to the race once. We bought tickets in a stand which was right by the exit to the tunnel near the "nouvelle chicane"...because of where it was (between the track and the water) the ticket included a ferry trip across the harbour to get to the stand. The stands were free seating so you could go right to the back and watch the cars coming through the tunnel and then spin round and see them going through the chicane and down along the harbour...it was one of the cheaper stands and seemed like a good option to us.
Getting around Monaco itself during the GP is a bit of a nightmare as the GP track is effectively the main part of the road system.....most of the local's leave.
