Renting Villas Abroad?
Discussion
Does anyone have any experience of renting villas before?
Ideally would like to rent somewhere in France, preferably by the coast. Google only seems to bring up villas for rent on the luxury end of the scale. I was wondering if anyone had any links or suggestions?
Would that fact that we would be a group of 4-6 (albeit mixed) of 22-24y/o count against us?
Just looking to while away a few evenings in the sun.
Cheers

I've rented out this one before http://www.jmlvillas.com/villa/484
Couple that own it are English and very nice. Its only about 5 minutes walk from the beach and marina (which is huge if you like boats, particularly super yachts). The only drawback is you need to rent a space in the underground car park if you are driving down but its only about 40 euros a week.
There are 3 bedrooms, 2 with double beds and 1 with bunk beds.
If you want any more information about the place let me know.

Also used www.villarenters.com a few times over the years.
We've been renting villas every year for 20 years or so - never had a bad experience with villas from either of those sites. You have to choose carefully though!
www.ownersdirect.co.uk is probably now the biggest site.
The procedure is simple, you find a villa that is available the week you want it and send an e-mail to the owner detailing who is going. If they accept, you will generally have to pay a deposit immediately - this can vary from 10% to 25% and the remainder 8 weeks before.
It's worth looking at the damage deposit which is also payable up front as this can vary from £100 to £250, refundable after the villa has been inspected and is obviously a significant expense even if you get it all back. If it's a large group, don't be surprised if the deposit is a lot bigger.
The other "trick" to watch out for is some villas quote a price for eithr a couple or up to 4 and add on 10% or £25 for each extra person so check the ad.
The other "trick" is a cleaning fee "payable locally" which can be around 60-75 euros. Personally, I avoid ads which make such a charge as it should be included in the rental.
Most renters accept internet bank transfers. I've rented around 8 - 10 villas and most damage deposits tend to be refunded in full fairly promptly. If, when you get there, thee is evident damage, take a dated photo and if you ahve internet, send an e-mail to the renter to cover yourself although at the cheaper end of the market, you'll find some villas in need of some maintenance.
So in short, raed the ad and see what is included and take all expenses into account before committing.
Finally, bear in mind that you will have to budget for either eating out every day and night or buying in food and food abroad is not cheap and those things like bread and coffee you take for granted can take a chunk of your money.
All that said, I have a family with 3 kids and would never ever go back to using a hotel as we like the freedom, the flexibility and we always try to get a pool of some sort.
