We went to Kephalonia over the last week in Aug/first week in Sep. The difference on the 1st Sep was night/day, prices halved in the restaurants and it was about half as busy everywhere!

I think that it is hard to go wrong anywhere in Greece, including mainland. It is very much a perfect beach holiday location. You just need to research the resort to check that it can tick all your boxes.

Skopolos, is perfect if you want remote beaches.

The place I stayed at in Skopelos closed at the end of September so you may not have much choice on the smaller islands in October.

Over the years I've been to Crete, Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Lesbos and Ios, all of them fantastic, although the latter involves a long ferry ride from Piraeus and back then was an island which was a massive backpacker party destination, but I'm told it has changed/is changing.

I'd go back to all of them, just do your homework on the exact location and you can't really go wrong.

Crete is open all through October.
If you can get to an island by air from the UK then there will be stuff open. Can be the best time of the year as les tourists. Not too hot and sea is warm.

We've done mainland in October before (Halkidiki) very quiet a lot of places do close but if you want to enjoy the country without the stifling summer weather it's great. If we didn't have kids there is absolutely no way we would go in August but we've a few years of it left yet!

Corfu for us in August, some stunning parts.

Skiathos is probably my favourite though.
Many many years ago did a week in Skiathos and a week in Skopelos.

Absolutely loved them both But that was a long time ago

Kefalonia for me, one of my favourite places. Not sure how exciting it would be for teenagers though.

Another good option is stay near a cluster of islands and ferry hop to different places. For example Mykonos is great for 2 days and then Naxos etc.

Been going to the Greek islands since the 80s. A lot of the suggestions are great if you don’t have teenagers but places like kefalonia katelios they will be bored as very small and sleepy, Scala and Lassi are busier.
Been to Naxos over 10 years ago and the beaches are the best I have seen in Greece fine white sand and turquoise water. Naxos town was buzzy with plenty of bars.
You need to find a place that has nightlife not far from a lowkey resort. Another suggestion is Rhodes, been to Lindos a few times busy but low key nightlife also Skiathos is great, town also buzzy at night but there is a bus that runs along the coast to all resorts so you can have the best of both with out having to hire a car.
Good luck lots of choices but you need to be near to access some nightlife as kids will be bored!

Best way to get to Naxos , Ios and Paros is to fly to Santorini and get the ferry but needs planning to do on the same day, I looked into this last year.
When we went to Naxos 10/12 years ago we flew into Mykonos and took the ferry, but this was a package in the days of many tour companies and discounts sadly packages to these islands are expensive much better doing on your own

If you want somewhere not too touristy with a bit of nightlife then I think Paleochora in Crete fits the bill. There are quite a few Villas available for rent, but you would probably need to do it totally independently, rather than using someone like Simpson Travel or CV Villas. Avoid the north coast of Crete, none of it could ever be defined as "not too touristy".

Corfu could also probably meet your requirements - it is still quite swanky in places. CV Villas started out as Corfu only and they still have loads of "hand picked" properties on the island. Kavos is the place where all the kids go, but it really is quite seedy, strip clubs and tattoo parlours. Not sure what the night life is like in the north of the island.

I've never felt the need to cook in Greece - or even put together a bread and cheese lunch. Eating out is so chilled there's just no incentive to do anything else.

Rhodes was definitely open last October although we avoided the brits abroad resort which I guess may have closed.

The Old Town was heaving and the pictoresque bits like Lindos were still busy.

Our Kos holiday for October half term has just been cancelled, hotel no longer available.

They did have the cheek to offer an inferior hotel first though.

Back to the travel agents to find something else.

We looked and you now can't book that particular hotel at all so I assume it's closed for some reason rather than being overbooked.

Might just wait and see if there's any last minute deals now.

Second holiday in the last few years that's been cancelled on us as we were due to fly out of Doncaster airport a month after it closed, not having much luck.

I have flown Manchester/Athens/ Naxos and Manchester/Athens/Paros twice. The flights run quite late into the day from Athens to the smaller islands. For reference I have also flown to Mykonos and got the ferry to Naxos, in my view going to Athens then flying onwards is easier. Ios I'd fly Santorini then ferry, like you say.

Thanks for that, thought it would be easier and cheaper flying to Santorini first as Tui fly there
