We’ve had this pond for over 25 years and we’ve had our share of midge type things frown and dragonflies smile but this year we’ve got loads of flies I don’t recognise. And when I say loads, I mean swarms of the bloody things. They seem to have no interest in the water but just land and mess about on the lily pads.

Difficult to get a decent pic as they fly away when you get close. And they don’t seem of the bitey variety. But are the going to do something to bugger up my pond? Will they be laying eggs or something the fish will eat?

Thanks for that. Looks like the beastie. Some more googling on Poecilobothrus nobilitatus and Semaphore flies says historically they’ve been found mainly in the south and midlands, but with climate change (yeah, yeah rolleyes) it’s being found further north. I’m in Fife, Scotland and for sure never seen them before, so they’ve either come up for their holidays or the weather is looking more attractive to them. But seem harmless enough I guess.
