No, not a new XXX movie, but a situation I'd appreciate any advice on.

I bought a pedigree kitten from a registered breeder last Thursday as a present for my girlfriend only to find out when I got home that the kitten was constipated and seemed in pain. I looked underneath and its arse was the size of a large grape (kitten is only about 25cm long) and had hard pieces of shyte hanging from its back side.
I called the breeder but there was no response so phoned the local vet who said it sounded serious and asked me to bring her in.
The cat had an enema and various drugs to clear the system. Told to keep it in a cage for a couple of days for the swelling to reduce. By Monday morning the swelling was the size of a golf ball so I brought it back to the vets for a "faecal milking" (the sound of which almost made me retch) and a small operation and had to leave the kitten with the vet for the day. Collected the cat last night to be told that it has a congenital condition that the breeder would have know about and needs an operation and will require on-going medical treatment. Its now on cat laxatives so everything is going straight through it so its having to be kept in a cage and cleaned every couple of hours.

Normally, I would have just had the cat put down but without being able to speak to the breeder to confirm that I could bring the cat back and get a refund, I felt I had no option but to go ahead with the operation. The vet said it was likely that it would die without the operation.

The cat is insured but the insurance company will not confirm that they will cover the costs until further investigation.

The vets bills so far have been almost £700 and the cost of the kitten in the first place was £400 so I'm over a grand down and have a malfunctioning cat and a house that stinks of st.

I've left voice mails for the breeder, texted, and emailed but no response. As she lives on an MOD base, I cant just turn up, drop the cat off and demand my money back either. I've just tried her again now and the mobile is now unavailable. She also lives an hour and a half away so its not local.

Caveat emptor etc but the vet has confirmed that the cat had the condition before collection and the breeder would have been aware.

Apart from getting my solicitor involved do I have any other options?

Many thanks.

Hi I'm going to speak to a friend who is a breeder of cats for advice for you, this is completely out of order and a disgrace on the part of the breeder. I don't know if there may be some group (such as kennel club equivalent you could report to) will let you know.

Hi just spoken. The kitten should be registered with either

TICA
FB
GCCF
They have governing bodies who will really frown on this.
The kittens papers should show a prefix name ie a name specific to her line. Personal mail me if you need if this doesn''t make sense. Though I'm not home til 8pm

Thank you for the response. I will check the paper work this evening when I get home. I've actually just had a call from the vet who after further investigative work, has found out that the poor thing has a malformed vulva and rectum and under their recommendation, has sadly just been put down.
Its been very sad for my family, especially the children, 5 and 2, but more than anything, I'm really annoyed. The vet actually suggested contacting the RSPCA as the cat was "severely underweight and borderline malnourished".

I have tried contacting the breeder yet again but to no avail.

Sadly from what you have described the vet advised correctly. This kitten should never have got to a new home, shockingly poor of the breeder and very unfair on the kitty, amazed it made it to the age it did with those problems. I'm so sorry you've had such a poor experience for all the family.

Jeez, that's grim all round. Poor kitty.

Rogue breeders need locking up IMO, especially those with no concerns whatever for their animals' welfare.

Do please let us know how you get on if you pursue this further.
