Lost my old mate today
Discussion
My old mate Lydia the Lurcher died today, absolutley gutted but she was 17 and had had two strokes. Lost the use of one of her hind legs and with other complications we agreed with the Vet enough was enough. Still I'm so upset, the house is so quiet without her..I'm sure with time I will feel better but at the moment its very raw...
It's always sad to lose a loved pooch after so long. My old fella was 16 when we had him put to sleep. He was riddled with cancer and it was the kindest thing for him. We now have a barking mad Staffie who's 2 and a half and 10 time dafter than the old fella ever was. I need eyes up my backside with him!!!
Sorry to hear - 17 is amazing.
Neighbour lost their last setter a week ago. And on the same day we nearly lost our 16yo collie after a fit. Vet was very surprised next morning how she had recovered - thankfully we didn't take a quick decision the previous night. The day will arrive in the coming weeks or months though, and it won't be a good day as she has been with us as long as we have been together. Having other dogs in the house will I'm sure be the only thing that stops the house feeling empty and quiet as you mention.
The hardest thing at the moment is learning to come to terms with the rapidly moving old age changes (us and not the dog - although she has her own challenges) - not getting up with us, not bothered about walking. Eating, sniffing in the garden, and even 'playing' with a young irish setter are still on the menu though.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. It leaves such a hole in your life. But time heals, it's a week tomorrow I had to have my terrier put to sleep and for the first time this morning we were able to laugh about some things she used to do. A couple of days ago I would have been in tears. So chin up and remember the good times. 17 years is a cracking innings!
