Just saw this strange little bird that I haven't seen before around here (or anywhere) -

It was small - about the size of a sparrow.
It had red markings around its head, sides and back.
It had yellow markings on its side body.
On its tail wing it had black with distincive white spots.
The res of the body was normal brownish colour.

Any ideas ?

Very pretty little bird and not seen that often.

If you have a bird feeding station, then Nijer seeds are what they like.

I had some on mine, but they seem to have moved on now sadly.

Pretty, yes. Not seen often?

I can count myself very lucky then. I regularly have a group of seven or eight that visit my bird feeders several times a day.

Little b uggers make hell of a mess. More seed dropped onto the floor than any other feeder by a country mile!

I believe they are quite localised, so where to some they are as common as muck, others rarely see them. As I said, I had some earlier this year, but Ive not seen them for many weeks now.

Quick snatched pic....

offer them hulled sunflower husks, these make no mess and will not sprout, we have 2 feeders each with 10 feeding ports, and each day they are filled with goldies.

Charm. A charm of Goldfinches is the collective noun.
