Hiya,

Just wondering, does anyone have any experience of lurcher puppies? What are they like to train?

We've had retrievers, setters and terriers before, but never lurchers. Now we have the chance of a 6-month-old pup from a rescue and I'm just wondering what we'd be letting ourselves in for! smile

So, any anecdotes, photos, etc. - please post! beer

Any idea as to it's breed mix, can make a difference to it's potential temperament, excitability, trainability etc but generally they're a good type and I rarely meet badly behaved ones.

I had one years ago , Jake wasnt a pup when we got him { rescue dog } but he was a big gentle lump that was happiest lying on your feet

Great dogs and certainly would consider another one some day

According to the RSPCA Norwich, Lucy is a Lurcher. We got her at 9 weeks, she's now 3 & 1/2.
The first female dog or Lurcher type I'd had in 30 years.

She's bright as a button, when she wants to come in from the garden she bangs on the back door.
She's stubborn as hell, my Labrador always does as he's told and wants to please, she'll do it if she wants to.
She can run like the wind and will chase a ball or stick for hours but at home just lays about sleeping.
She will thieve food if you are daft enough to leave it laying about.

The last thing your lunch remembers. biggrin

Would I have another one? In a heartbeat, she's the sweetest, gentlest dog I've ever had.
Having said that, my Labrador doesn't think so. If he pees her off she'll chase him round the field and bring him down like prey!

Thanks for all the replies and photos! thumbup

There's actually been a slight change of plan since this morning - the pup we had our eye on was reserved before we got there. But there's another - her name is (currently) Fudge, which gives you idea of her colour! She's 14 weeks old and a lurcher cross. No idea what she's crossed with, but if it helps it's estimated she'll grow up to be smaller than a lab. Either way, we reserved her and we'll pick her up early next week when she's had her second set of vaccinations. bounce

I've got a photo which I'll post later on. smile

Looks like she has a lot of whippet in her. If so she'll be a winner smile. I may be slightly biased as I have a whippet wink

Don't you dare go there!! biggrin

No, I don't think she's got any Great Dane in her (at least, I hope not!!) - her paws aren't all that big. Whippet might be right - but I suppose there's no way of knowing. She has a brother who's smaller but fatter than she is, but I can't tell from him either what they're crossed with. They're both this sandy colour with dark muzzles.

Ah well, not to worry. As long as she's happy and healthy, that's all that matters. Just as long as she doesn't end up the size of a Shetland pony. wink

Max :-

We picked up Max from the Dogs Trust rescue centre about three years ago. He was 9 months at the time and had spent his entire life in kennels (apart from three short unsuccessful homings).

He took a while to be house trained and he did destroy quite a lot in the first six months. Electric blanket, hairdryer, shoes, two television remote controls etc etc.

However, he's now well behaved and is a fantastic dog. We opted for him because of his nature as we had a baby on the way and he's been absolutely fantastic with him. Matthew's now nearly two and he climbs over him and pulls his tail and Max just shrugs it off (or maybe licks him in the face).

He does like to chase small furry things (and sticks/balls) and has caught a few rabbits in his time.

He is an intelligent dog, but can be quite aloof if he wants to be. He doesn't always follow orders. If he's taken two good walks a day he'll quite happily sleep for the rest of the day in the house.

Like the post above, if there's any food left out when we leave the house - it'll be gone in a flash.

Thanks for all the advice and photos! beer Your dogs are gorgeous, I hope ours turns out to be too.

We've decided that she's to be called Poppy now - "Fudge" is okay, but it's not very "her". She's coming from the Dogs Trust in Salisbury and has already been rehomed and returned once - after two days, when she chased her previous owners' cats. rolleyes She seems to be a quick learner - the first time we saw her, she was jumping up for attention. The second time three days later, she decided to sit to ask for attention. We're going to be taking her to basic training classes anyway, just for socialisation as much as for anything else.

Anyway, we're picking her up on Wednesday morning and I'm dying to post in the "Photos of your dogs" thread! But for now, I shall content myself with another couple of nice shots from the puppy pen at the Dogs Trust. smile
