Hi all,

Last week I took my dog, Luca to the vets. He had been lethargic
and generally quiet. Nothing like himself.
After a blood count test it was found his platlet count was in the 70's. So
we were told to come back for a retest three days later (Thursday).
On the second test it was again in the low 70's.
The vet has asked for us to bring him back in on Tuesday for a third test
which if low he will do a bone biopsy.
But today Luca has started getting nose bleeds. Safe to say I am really worried and not sure if I should go to the emergancy vets today or wait and see how he is over night?
Any help or advice would be really apreciated.

Dave.

frown I don't know the answer as I have no knowledge of this. Are you able to phone the emergeny vets to get some advice?

Hope everything is OK.

Thanks Mrs Grumpy,

We did call the emergency vets but because we don't know what the underlying cause is they wouldn't be able to treat.
He is now at our vets where he will be getting his third blood test and a bone biopsy which will hopefully tell us whats wrong.

Edited to add his temperature is 41.

Poor Luca, I wish I could help but this one really needs a diagnosis, sending him get well soon wishes.

Though just one thing, has he had any meds recently? (I'm sure your vets have already asked/ checked

Hi Bex,

No he's not on any medication. He did have PDA when he was one which resulted in him having open heart surgery but no links
to his current illness.

Ok, I have known certain antibiotics can cause it but knew it was a long shot.

Update:

Luca is now back home with us after spending a couple of days in the vetssmile
All his test have come back withing normal parameters. Which is good but doesn't
explain why he's ill.
The vet does think that it might be Lung worm? but say's it's hard to get a positive test result.
We still don't have a reason for his high temperature, which is still 39.5 or his lethargy and the
nose bleed.
He now has diarrhoea to add to his symptoms and has lost over two kilos in as many weeks.

Any thoughts?

Fingers crossed for your four legged friend. I hope they get some answers. Is he on steroids for it? Not saying he should be just curious.

Nope he's currently on no medication. Just rest and make sure he eats and drinks well.

It's been a while but we have a diagnosis of "Canine Pemphigus Vulgaris"

He's on steroids so we have our fingers crossed of a positive outcome.

Has anyone got any info with either this disease or living with a dog on steroids?

Hi. Always a relief to get a diagnosis.

Steroids do have side effects. The idea is to start on a dose to get problem under control then lower to a maintenance level to reduce side effects but :still control the condition.

Common side effects can be:
Drinking more
Eating more
Lethargy
Panting
Weeing more due to drinking more (sometimes causing incontinence)

Most above signs can and will reduce if dose of steroids can be lowered. People can get bloated on steroids animals generally don't but they can gain weight because they seem more hungry so get fed more. Try and avoid this they don't actually need more food.

More serious but less likely possibilities
Diabetes
Cushings disease

I hope he's doing ok and that the above info helps a bit.

Afraid I can't offer much re: his condition I know all the words but not as a collective condition! I could ask at work next wk.

Thanks Bex,

He's doing pretty well in himself though as you say sleep is a little lacking with visits to the toilet in the middle of the night smile
