Hi all Im worried about my dog "Buster" He came in from the garden on monday with a semmingly bruised or bitten nose ,we put him to bed as normal however in the morning his nose had erupted into a swollen red mass as in the picture the vet hasnt been much help TBH, we just thought it would go away over a few days ,he also has some small lumps about the size of peas on the other side of his nose> Ive had to get a buster collar to stop him scratching it but I dont like the look of it the picture ive attatched is the second day its now a pink mass which bleeds and is quite large, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Straight back to a different vet. Today. No idea what it is but seems obvious that it needs seen NOW (not Monday) as it's got worse so quickly. At the very least speak to one of the 24 hour vet places by phone. Poor pup, it looks really sore.

I had a dog that had something that looked exactly like that. Vet said it was common, but not known what causes it. Possibly shoving nose under the fence.

Treated with ABs. Came up in little lumps, which burst and looked like raspberry jam! I just bathed it with salt water.

Not saying it's exactly the same thing, but looks remarkably similar.

Most likely a deep pyoderma, but will email our dermatologist to see if he agrees and what to do. Might be monday before I can get an answer to you.

Oh ok thanks for your help,we have had a "buster" collar on all weekend ,it had swollen towards the end of the week and was just like a pink mass that was bleeding and looked horrible, since then it has sort of dried out but has a pink raw area just where his tounge can still reach it does crack occasionaly and still bleed,he has had a course of AB and a steroid injection. It does look a bit quieter and most of it is now hard and crusty.
Thanks again.

Spoke to our dermatologist today and he confirms that it is most likely a deep pyoderma, which is a skin infection that goes a bit deeper than usual, probably caused by "trauma" of some sort to the skin. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory cream should be sufficient, although it sounds like it is drying up anyway. Hope it's better soon.
