Miniature Schnauzer Owners??
Discussion
We're looking for a second dog to keep Jess, our 11 month old Westie company and were thinking about a Miniature Schnauzer.
Has anyone here got any experience with them? From speaking to other owners when we've been out and about they all seem to say the same, that they're wonderful dogs, intelligent, laid back and generally a pretty healthy breed.
Anyone got anything else to add about them?
Just for the sake of it, here's Jess!

I have had a few of these in my lifetime. I agree with what you have been told but one thing to ensure is that any puppy/dog that you buy has been tested for PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and HJC (Hereditary Juvenile Cataract). Parents should be tested and have clear certificates too.
Other good points are the lack of a moulting coat (though regular grooming required to keep it in shape) and lack of the doggy smell to those people who worry about such things.

Mini Schnauzer owner here. We've never owned a dog before so when we decided that the time was right, we did loads of research. We researched Forums, the Schnauzer club websites through out the globe etc and all came to the same view that you've heard from people. Caring, loyal, intelligent, non-moulting, fun etc
We decided that a Schnauzer was for us so then looked at colour. The most popular colours are pepper and salt, black and black and silver but we fell in love with the rare white. So we searched breeders and knew what to ask / look for. Full breed is important as Mini's can suffer from eye issues so a clean eye test of both parents and the pup is vital. Also important is temperament - some Mini's can be very vocal but most are very laid back.
We were very lucky to find two litters of white pups available and one that was fairly local. We arranged to see both litters but fell in love with Billy as soon as we saw him. His parents were very laid back, he was playful, fun and very loving so that was it - job done!
Billy has been with us for just over 2 years now and other than a month or so of "terrible teens" (selective deafness, no recall, over confident etc) he's been a completely ideal dog. He loves everything we love: our family, our friends, running (with me), mountain biking, cars (he travels brilliantly even in the race cars) and loves coming racing with us (in mainland Europe of course).
Everyone loves Billy, even people who dislike dogs (like my mum) and he is very well behaved (we have strict rules - no sofas, no bedrooms, no begging) but still has a very naughty glint in his eye. We have left him entire as he has no issues at all and isn't interested in females.
Billy's favourite things are: sleeping, running, playing with dogs (you haven't lived until you've seen two Schnauzers play!), his Dentastick, his tennis ball, us. Maybe not in that order...
I don't think we've just been lucky as our thoughts and observations seem to mirror other Schanauzer owners. If you need any more info, please let me know.

I can't recall how to post photos on P/H so here's a link to some pictures I posted on the Schanuzer forum. BTW, lots of great advice here.

BTW, Billy has "special" ears - at a young age they developed strong muscles and we decided to allow nature to take its course. He now looks utterly gorgeous and very dinstinctive!

Try contacting the Schnauzer Club of Great Britain, http://www.schnauzerclub.co.uk/puppy.shtml they will be able to put you in touch with breeders who currently have puppies. I have a friend who breeds them but he doesn't have any at the moment.
