On my way home this evening I stopped to help someone who was standing over a injured cat in the road. The guy who was helping said he'd seen someone speeding up our road and hit the cat. They didn't even slow down, let alone stop! mad
I got there minutes after it had happened and unfortunately the lovely cat died in front of our eyes due to the injuries. Obviously we couldn't leave this poor cat in the middle of the road so we put him into a box so we could move him from the road. cry

Now here is the question, who would you contact in this situation?

I didn't think it was worth calling an emergency vet as there was nothing to be done to save him.
I tried calling the RSPCA but they didn't want to know as the cat had already died. They suggested to call my local council. I called them and they said that they don't have an out of hours procedure for cats!

So who are you supposed to contact?

In the end the other guy took the cat to one of the local vets in hope that he could be scanned and hopefully find an owner as it looked like he was a lovely and well looked after cat. Other than that it seems as though we were supposed to leave the poor thing at the side of the road and the council would eventually come round over the next few days to collect him.

Local vets is one option, leaving it roughly where found but moved to a more discreet spot so it's found by someone who knows/ owns it (horrible for them but better that not knowing) or again leave where found for council to collect, they do record details and scan them.

We get quite a few dead cats brought to us from scenarios like yours. It can depend greatly on time of day aswell late at night leaves less options.

Would have taken it to a vet (in the morning if not viable straight away) and asked them to scan for a chip and find the owner.

I'd want to know if anything happened to my 2 frown

It was about 8pm by the time we'd finished making loads of phone calls.

We didn't want to leave it where it was due to it's very obvious injurys, also there is a school close by so there would have been kids walking past in the morning.

I've always had pets and know how heart breaking it can be when one goes missing, so wanted to do the right thing by the owners if at all possible.

I just found it very strange that no one wanted anything to do with it, yet if it was a dog or wildlife they would have found someone to come out.

First of all well done for what you did.

I would have taken it to the vets for a scan, then I guess it's putting a sign or two up in the local area on lampposts.

You can apparently take them to a local police station who should have scanning equipments (more so the dog section i believe) although we saw a cat once get hit by a small van so we turned round and collected it off the main road and him in the boot of the car on some pet blankets, then drove to the local cop shop (the main grimsby town one), who didn't have a clue what to do but showed us where the local PDSA vets were who were still open (it was 9.30PM) and wrapped in our pet blanket we took it in but they were closed so after ringing the bell with no luck, we chose to leave the cat wrapped up in the blanket outside the doors (it was already dead by then), went back 30mins later and they had found him, scanned for a chip but alas didn't have one, nor a collar.

in the morning phone around all the local vets and get them to put details of the cat in the lost/found book, if its left on the side of road then chances are mr fox will take it.

Why not stick a note on a tree of post near to where it was found, no doubt the owner will be looking for it by now so at least they'll know what happened and it was looked after at the end. Well done for being so caring.

Well now i feel really st.

I've just had a note through my door saying about a missing cat called Boris, matching the discription of the one which was run over. I went outside and I've just spoken to the guy who was posting the notes and have had to tell him about the cat i helped on Tuesday, we think it was his cat cry

He's going to contact the vets tomorrow and find out.

I think it was more the fact of that he was no longer 'a cat' he actually was someones loved pet.

I'm glad I've been able to give them the information they need to hopefully get him back and give him a burial.

Nice one for what you did.
As a cat owner having been through this, it's horrible not to know what has happened to them and fearing he/she has been locked in a shed or garage and them not being found etc.
Finding out that your cat has died is not nice but I'd feel better knowing what had happened and knowing that it was with someone who cared when it passed away rather than being left in the road to be run over again and again.

You did well sir.

Don't, you did nothing wrong, and did far more than most people would.

You will have made him feel better - far better to find and know his cat was hit and killed than never know what happened to it.

So all credit to you and I hope you can feel as well as can be expected under these circumstances.
