Help me please! One of my barbs has almost white velvet around his eyes which are sticking our far and look like they're bloodshot. Same think with my swordtail who is hanging around the bottom not moving a lot; a Gourami is also very still.

Thanks, Tom

Sounds like cotton mouth.

Get those fish out of there now! Treat them and the tank asap!

Don't be suprised of you lose the ones already showing signs. It's quite a nasty infection, usually once it's taken hold of a fish, that's it frown

let us know how you get on.

unfortunately by now I would expect all fish to be infected.

get some treatment and hope for the best.

take your time before you restock as you will want to have done enough water changes (over time) so that the water quality is back to normal.

any idea how the infection occurred? i.e. new fish/ornaments/plants?

My barb died today. It looked almost blind; it got really bad. I have been putting esha 3000 in since i saw it, other fish seem ok,. Hopefully it hasnt spread. I have live plant in with big leaves which a few are starting to die. I live in a VERY hard water area, you can use a kettle once and it will be covered in limescale; could this be to do with it? I've been keeping fish for a yearish now so not amazingly experianced. Also I've left the light on long hours recently causing algae to grow, could this be related?
Thanks

None of those things will have caused the problem, but it can be caused by poor oxygen levels or an overstocked tank. It also may have cone off a new fish.

I had White spot in my tank and was reduced as to how to treat my fish because of my plants and certain fish not tolerating salt added to the water.

Anyway... Methalene blue is a good treatment for any infection, you just have to make sure you know what you are doing and have all your apparatus readily available.

The treatment you added to the tank... Did you make sure it was suitable for live plants? The reason your plants may be looking a bit off is because the treatment is killing them.

OR your water quality is way off and that may explain the cotton mouth and the yucky plants.

Those forums get a lot of traffic so I'm sure you'll get some help there.

Thanks Ill have a look. On the treatment box it said well tolerated by plants and shrimps. When I did the water change I sucks LOADS of c**p from the bottom. You can buy dip stick things to test your water quality? I havent put new fish in for a while. I have had white spot ages ago from a new fish frown

In terms of water quality testing the most reliable option is getting a liquid drop based testing kit that tests ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. The strip based ones aren't always accurate I use the API freshwater master test kit but whilst I personally think such kit's should be mandatory for new aquarium owners (because all the above are harmful to fish in one way or another) they won't be able to detect diseases and infections.

If your fish survive this infection heres the kit I use if you decide to invest - it'll last forever:
