Why do cats go absolutely nuts for the red dot from a laser pen?

Both of ours get absolutely fixated by them and chase that red dot like they're Wile E Coyote and it's Road Runner!

The hilarity of watching them chase that dot is priceless biggrin

Mine have got bored of it now - just watch it (occasionally they'll try to put a paw on it)

Mine loves them but had no time at all for the Frolicat Dart I bought her, it's got to be manual or she's just not playing.

We had a cat that would go totally mental for springs!

When she was a kitten my dad accidentaly dropped a compression spring of about 1" length onto the kitchen floor, being a spring it bounced quite well. The kitten appeared from nowhere and proceeded to chase it about the kitchen for about half an hour.

From then on we always kept a few springs in the house just for her to play with.

Conversely, my frolicat dart is now worn out and a replacement is on order....

I'm beginning to think mine might have been faulty to be honest, everyone else only has good things to say about them.

We use the prospect of 5 mins playing with the laser pointer to tempt one of ours into the house.

Just showing her the pen will have her inside without even switching it on.

Hmmm it's strange one of ours will go mental for it, chase the red dot for hours, and when you put it away she'll spend the next half an hour looking for it.

The other one.... Looks at you like your an idiot. "why am I going to chase that stupid red light round?"

Just a quick word of 'spoil sports' caution.

Don't allow your dog to get into this as it can create obsessive light chasing behaviour. Not funny for the dog or owner to live with.

As you were.

I found similar results using the clicking noise of the button to get mine in, worked better than shaking a bag of treats.

Weird little animals.
