Question - do dogs and cats share the same species of ticks with cats?

We used to have a rather funky neighbour with a whole menagerie of stray and feral cats as well as a few funky dogs. Whilst he was our neighbour we used to have to keep our mutts constantly dosed with frontline and be digging ticks out of them even then.

He has been gone for nearly 2 years and the mutts have been tick free ever since.

New neighbours have reciently taken in a pair of semi-feral cats a month ago and our cats are getting ticks again ....

our the mutts getting ticks from the newly pet feral cats or do i need to look elsewhere?

Appologoies for spelling - slightly hight from spraying 3 dogs with frontline spray ...... no ticks on me biggrin

I've had different answers from two different vets - from the same practice......... biggrin

So I guess it's safe to say, I don't know..... Oh, and it was fleas and ticks I asked about....

Ticks are opportunists, most ticks are actually sheep ticks so it'd be a bit strange that cats have caused an increase in tick numbers, more likely wildlife such as hedgehogs. The cats may get ticks due to hunting but they would be a few isolated ones.

We are reaching the time of year where they'll become more active again, if you have long grass get it cut this will increase the risk of them in your area, also if walking in areas where grass is getting longer avoid it for next couple of months.

Ah! There's my assumption that everyone here lives in the uk being shown up smile

In which case I'm not sure if the area you are in makes a difference re cats being responsible for the ticks sorry.

I'd guess its the same as the UK, that ticks aren't fussy as to what species they suck from - inc us humans (limes disease carriers). Also whatever the species of tick they all act the same - opportunists. (sheep & deer ticks common in UK)
As said, they climb to the tips of vegetation (bracken here is the common place)
if any animal is infested (such is common with hedgehogs here) they will obviously drop fat fed ticks around the locality and they can be picked up by any of your pets.
the frontline gift to your neighbours may do the trick, but i don't fancy thier chances of an event-free time of getting it on the freal cats LOL

I did give him a beer after watching the warefare - frontline was applied, so mission accomplished but i think the cost to allied forces was high hehe
