Can't he just leave them for a couple of months? They would be done with the nest, and the youngsters fledged. Then fill the hole up.

Leave them alone, they won't do any harm and it's a joy watching them and their youngsters. He should consider himnself lucky, we keep putting nesting boxes up in our hawthorn hedge but they havenlt usd them.

That was my recommendation but his wife is panicking about having birds in the roof, it is above her bedroom.
But this is a 'flat extension roof' - so what void are they in?

We had exactly the same problem until we changed the soffits.

I love the birds but the mess they make is amazing. Conservatory room covered in muck, rotting dead young, magots etc etc.

They are getting in through a gap between the fascia boards, they must be in the void between the flat roof and the bedroom ceiling, between the joists.
Well I agree they will make a noise, but the room can't be filled with 'muck, rotting dead young, magots etc etc' because there is a ceiling in the way.

I'd live with it for now and fix the hole when they've gone.

It's illegal to interfere with an active nest, regardless of eggs/chicks, that includes blocking the entrance (yer some birds/situations are exempt before the pedants pipe up - but not tits in this case).

Blue tits have one brood Apr-May.

So yes it is possible that the hen has started laying already. 15-23 days before they fledge,so the nest should be clear by the end of june.

We have had them in bird boxes and when I came to empty them out there is very little mess at all,the nesting material soaks up the poo which soon dries out.

Blue tits carry the chick poo away in a little faecal sack and drop it elsewhere.

Yes indeed, there's always somebody worse off than yourself biggrin

Think of the folk in Christchurch - they'd be happy to have a roof to have birds in...

I think possibly "god" has spoken. And it appears he'd prefer it if your neighbour left his tits alone!

Yup, hopefully he didn't manage to block the hole up before he fell off the ladder.

I hope the wife reflects on how her irrational phobia almost killed her husband..... in all seriousness, maybe.

And how the birds now trapped inside are going to die a slow lingering death from starvation. All because somebody is frightened of a few feathers on the other side of a plasterboard ceiling.

OK, well let's hope it was done soon enough for the birds to start again somewhere else.

I suppose you could put up a nesting box biggrin

this is really bad....even if there were no eggs if there was a nest it is illegal to interfere with it.
so many people just think its when there are chicks on a nest, we had the same thing at work with a pair of nesting pigeons, someone destroyed the nest, however they were spotted doing it and that person no longer works for the company.
please think twice about people destroying nests and even disturbing birds that are trying to nest, and if you see or hear anything contact the rspb.

I don't get it. I'd be really pleased if I had a nest in my roof, it's nice for them to have somewhere safe and fascinating seeing the youngsters develop! We used to have house martins but they don't come anymore :-(
