Evening all,

SWMBO and I have recently moved into our own place and also her dad's cat Heidi has moved in with us. Now that we're looking after her we'd like to take out some pet insurance. She is a 13 year old domestic shorthair AFAIK.

I've just done a quote with Pet Plan and they've come back with £13.11 per month for cover up to £3000 per illness with an excess of £65 + 20% treatment cost.

The monthly payment seems fine but with the excess seems a little, well excessive(!) with the extra 20% on top of the set £65. Will this be due to her getting on a bit now? She is perfectly healthy and has never been to the vet since her first vaccinations as a kitten.

Does anyone have any recommendations for better/cheaper cover? Many thanks.

Sounds good to me. Many won't insure pets for first time if they're over 8 yrs old. Those that do will nearly always have you pay a % of the bill. My ins co quoted £125 excess and 15% when I looked to get my parents newly acquired 12yr old poodle insured!

Ahh okay. Thanks for you input, I've gone ahead and set it up now. Fingers crossed we won't need to be making any excess payments eh?! smile

When you say it's never been to the vet since it's first jabs, is it not getting it's yearly jabs, worming and yearly check ups?

Sounds good to me too. My older cat is now 11, I use PetPlan and they did not quibble when amongst other things she had 3 teeth extracted last year - not all policies cover this.

You can probably find cheaper monthly payments but cover is not always so thorough. As Bex says sometimes it is hard to find cover for older animals. It is worth having!
