Unfortunately I had to get my best friend of 13 and half years put down today.

She was a Newfoundland and her name was Tia, here she was when she was alot younger.

We have opted to have her cremated and get her ashes back so we can spread them somewhere.

Whats the chances of actually getting her ashes? or will it just be a mix?

So sorry - she was a lovely lady and got to a good age.

Whan I lost Sammie last month (my 8 month kitten) I took him to a pet crematorium where they cremate individually so I know I've got him back. We have a small oak casket which I got a plaque for and he's sitting waiting for me to pop my clogs when he can be recremated with me!!

You'll get plenty of posters telling you you'll be getting a mish mash of ashes - I think it depends on the crematorioum and the integrity of its owners.

Sorry Wullie. Its an awful time, sadly most of us have been there so we know where you're at.
Little Pip came back with a little clipping of hair just to show they had the right animal. Nice touch and it worked well with us.

Thank you for your replies.

I have to go to the vets on monday to pay the bill, as we got her put down at home. I think I will enquire then as to where she will be going and maybe phone the crematorium to see what they say.

Its not first dog to be put to sleep, Ive had 2 others, however I was young and dont think I fully understood, Ive had Tia since I was 13.

Thankfully I do have another Newfie, which makes things a bit easier, but hes an old boy at 9 too.

Lovely dogs and a great age for a big breed like that.It does ease the pain when you have another dog.
Were they related?
There was one near me, only knew it as a (very large)puppy but it had to go back to the breeder after 6 months.

Man, that's awful. But think of the life you gave them and the fun you all had.
Beautiful dogs, the wife's favourite.

frown. So sorry for your loss of an obviously loved four legged friend, amazing age she reached, remember you made a brave and ultimately the kindest decision on her behalf. Take care.

If you have a worry about the cremation some places will let you attend your pets indidual cremations. Ask your vet for a leaflet on the company they use, most vets try and be very careful when choosing a pet crematorium and would be horrified if they thought they (and their clients) were being decieved in anyway by a crematorium company. (the companies need to be licensed so this is a useful starting point in the reputation of a company.

I have used Cambridge Pet Crematorium on two occasions for individual cremations. If you wish you can spend time with your animal before the cremation and then after an hour or so you can take the ashes home with you.

ETA Just seen you are based in Scotland so probably of no help to you.

13 is a good age, ours is 12 now and I am getting nervous..........

I think that reputable places will ensure you get your own pet back.

My understanding is that most places are quite good. Just not this one: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-12...

Thank you again for your replies. Had a really hard day today, think whats happened is sinking in now. Had Haggis out a long walk today which cleared the head abit.

SPR2 - No they were not related, Tia we got as a puppy, and Haggis was a rescue at 2 yrs old.

Mrs Grumpy - Tia is a Landseer Newfoundland (black & white, though see did have some brown too)

My vet has always been good to our dogs and Ive always been happy with their services, so Im sure I will get most if not all of Tia's ashes back. (Although I have already said my goodbyes to her)

So sorry to hear of your loss, she looked a fine dog. When I had our GSD cremated in the summer, we could specifically ask that he be cremated on his own, and the paperwork that came back with his casket confirmed this.
You just hve to take it on trust, I suppose, and as previously said, it's not in your vet's interest to use cowboys.

It will get less painful as time goes on...

Thanks again everyone.

I have been to the vet this morning and got some more information.

She is being taken to Elysian Fields Pet Crematorium in Irvine for an individual cremation. I think as 'celticpilgrim' says it all comes down to trust and Im pretty sure I will get her ashes.

They have a website that seems genuine and has the right legislation etc. I'm sure they would be happy to chat to you if you still have concerns.

Sorry for your loss what a beautiful dog. I have had two of my dogs cremated and dont even think that it is anything other than them in the casket.
We have rescue dogs and always go to the RSPCA or the NCDL after a suitable period of mourning to give another dog a chance.we dont set a date usually something justs nudges us and another dog appears. I think its a good way of honouring the memory of our lost friends by giving another dog a chance. If you want a specific breed there are plenty of breed specific rehoming sites.
