Very poorly dog no idea what is wrong
Discussion
Last week I came home from work to be greeted by the boys our miniature schnauzer archie and our 2.5yr old yorkie/jack russell cross rigsby. Both were in great spirits as usual but an hour later following a feed rigsby looked very unwell no energy, vomiting and struggling to even walk.We decided not to mess around and took him straight to the vet. They immediately put him on a drip and by this time he was drooling and his eyes and face were swelling up.He was there all week but they could only assume he had ingested or eaten something and been poisened.
We got him back home yesterday and there was some of his old character back but this morning we found him lying on his bed looking really sorry for himself no tail wagging and not interested in food or water. We gave him a little while to come round and when there was no improvement we took him back to the vet.The vet gave him a big dose of adrenalin hoping this would perk him up and then sent us home asking us to feed him and come back at 5.30pm.
Well its been a couple of hours now and there is no change.Quite frankly its breaking my heart but im doing my best to hold it together in front of my 9yr old daughter. The vet has no real idea what is wrong with rigsby and although the wife and I cant say it but I think this could be it guys we could be saying goodbye to our wonderful little chap.
My daughter has been asking my wife this week why is dad not upset but its really starting to hurt now.
Sorry to dump on you all.

Sorry to hear that mate.
Seems a bit odd that they can't tell what's wrong with him. Might sound a daft question but do they seem very interested? Worth taking him to a different vet?
Hope he pulls through.

I have scoured the area looking for something, anything which could have caused this but there is nothing ??
It can happen when people top up their coolant with anifreeze and some spills on the drive. A neighbour did this near to me, he didn't realise, 2 cats died as a result. Animals are attracted to the sweet taste apparently, depending on amounts involved and concentration, it will either make the animals ill for a bit, or kill them. Its a particular problem at this time of year.soad said:
Would have thought vet had all the works? Full blood tests/toxic test?!
Hope he pulls through
Yes he has been having regular blood tests but they have not done toxic tests because they say they dont know what they are treating him for.I think they are now beginning to think it could be a kidney or liver problem not sure what was actually said.Hope he pulls through
Don't know what the symptoms suggest to be honest, but I would suggest you go back to vet for more supportive therapy such as iv fluids, and if there is no improvement or solution very quickly ie 12 hours, then request referral to Vet school where the investigative facilities are better than almost anywhere. "I don't know what's wrong" is sometimes a cue for referral when us normal GPs have run out of answers. Hope you get good news soon.
We took Sammie my sick 8 month old kitten to the Vet School in Edinburgh. They were brilliant!! The bill was big but they did everything they could to try and save him, and their care of us was exemplary too. Get an emergency referral - they're 24/7 places - or the Royal Dick is so I assume all the same.
Thanks all for the kind words & thoughts
Well we got back from the vets and during this time Rigsby has perked up quite a bit from the injection he had earlier. It looks like our little fella is anemic and is going to pull through. They cant be certain about why his eyes puffed up but think the initial severe attack was the cause. So he has been put on a course of steroids & touch wood things are looking a lot better.

Fingers crossed. Conditions such as non regenerative anaemia (not saying this is what it is) can do funny things. I did wonder if it could be something like this when I read your last post but it would have been wrong to say not knowing enough about his case. Fingers crossed the steroids will start to help, at least you seen to have an answer but if things drag on don't be afraid to ask about referral. Hope he has a speedy recovery.
