Well,

It decided to shoot in the house when I went out in the garden earlier.

The little mite won't go outside now. There is no collar or ID on him and can't hear anyone off the street calling out for a cat.

He's a friendly little thing, about six months old. Don't really want to ring the RSPCA and get them to take him away with the risk of an owner potentially losing their cat to a home.

Anyone got any tips on where to go from here?

It's no problem him being here as we are keeping him fed and watered for the time being.

Try the neighbours tomorrow, and if no joy, and he has stuck around, then go to a local vet and get him scanned for a microchip on Monday.

You'll need a litter tray and some food! Got a corner shop?

If its that small, its probably either lost and cared for dearly or semi ferrel mobile protein (in which case you can consider yourself adopted!)

Keep it safe overnight - if people want it they will be looking for it. Take it to a vets and see if it is microchiped and check the local newsagents and street lamp posts for lost cat posters. It's unlikely that the RSPCA or CPL will take it in at the moment - they are over flowing and have no space.

Be prepared to return it to owners if they find you over the next week or so, so don't get too attached. Equally, if it's a stray that has adopted you be prepared to stump up a ton or so for jabs and chips and snips!

Thanks for that. Plenty to bear in mind there. We've got some cat food, but no litter tray. Might get one if we can't find it's rightful owner tomorrow.

No problem giving it back either. I've got an 8 week old border collie pup arriving on Friday. However, they might make good companions for each other?!

Wasn't there a BBC news article recently about cat ownership - apparently there are 3 times as many cat owners as there are cats.

On that basis I'd leave it outside and let it find it's way home.

As above, keep it safe tonight, food and water. Also put some posters up in the local area and then get it scanned for a chip. If that all fails, you've just been adopted by a cat, and it and your new puppy will have a great time!

You may need to prepare a diy litter tray if you are going to keep it in all night. Other than that follow what everyone has already said. At least it is safe tonight smile

He looks in decent condition for a feral, so probably one thats wandered abit too far so try and get the word out in the next few days.

Think like someone who has lost a cat, and go to those places and put signs up.

He looks adorable smile

Yeah he looks well kept. Noticed a couple of homes with cat flaps on around here so i'll ask those tomorrow. Failing that, i'll put a notice up in the local shop smile

Don't give too much detail about the cat in the ad and get the owners to describe him over the phone, to avoid any false ownership claims. You don't want him to end up as beef chow mein.

A cat moved in with us, 5yrs later she's still here.

Good luck.

Well done for looking after the critter OP. You might be better of giving it a bowl of fresh water to drink instead of milk just in case he reacts to the lactose. Apologies if my eyes are deceiving me. smile

Aswell as the local shop, it's worthwhile putting a poster in the local vet and the local catteries too.
It worked for us when we lost our cat. You may find the owners have beaten you to it..........but be prepared to have the pitter patter of tiny feet in your life.

Oh, and top marks for being so kind and looking after him.

A lady phoned the other week, had a 'stray' cat for over 3 weeks that kept hanging around her house, she did the right thing and brought it to us to be scanned, unfortunately for her it was chipped (I felt a bit bad for her, her face dropped when she heard the scanner beep). I managed to track the owners. I spoke to them and they said she was wandering off more and more due to a dislike of her own offsprong (now mature kitten), I explained that the woman had started to become attached to their cat so be easy going with her. I think they may well be considering shared ownership!

Shared ownership is fine as long as it's clarified between the owners how they'll pay for veterinary tx and who will get it vacc etc!
