Vetty nursy folks - is there any difference in temperature between doggy hair dryers an human ones . i.e ,could I safely dry my Cairn with a human dryer on low setting . His coat is very thick ,but getting greasy & oily ( and smelly, possibly because true to breed he finds fox & other poo to roll in) .

Yes you can. We do it frequently at work just with a standard hairdryer (not a special animal one).

The trick is as you said lower setting and lower speed (lots of hairdryers have 2/3 speed and 2/3 heat setting) Go for mid heat and mid speed if 3 settings.

Keep the hairdryer moving up and down so the hairs are continually being blown about (hope that makes sense!) do not concentrate on one area so as to avoid hot spots forming on skin.

You probably don't need to dry completely, leaving a slightly damp coat should not be a problem.

Now all you need to do is find out if your dog likes the hairdryer, many get freaked out by them. If unsure switch on dryer, do not blow in dogs direction, give your dog a treat near the hairdryer and see how he reacts.

YOur Cairn will beed to have his coat stripped at some point, otherwise it'll get too thick (stripping preferable to clipping), check with grooming parlour about having this done,

Ours does that. Stinks! Doggy Perfum we call it. She gets hosed as soon as she gets back in.
