our 12 ish female cat was not herself last night, refused to eat and just tucked herself away upstairs, this morning she was downstairs in her bed, looked ok purring like mad at me, still not eating, tonight she ate a little wet food, she seems to be very sensitive round her back end- if i touch her near her rear she clamps down her tail and cries. any ideas?

First sign of an ill animal is not eating but sleeping/resting a lot. Could be that she is constipated or 'impacted'. I'd agree that if she is no better in the morning, a trip to the vet is in order. Might be something simple. Hope she gets better soon though smile

Edit:

Does she go outside? One of our cats once got hit by a car that broke her hip, only found out from an x-ray at the vets. Cats usually make it back home to recouperate.

That's some good news then smile Possibly (now I am speculating way too much) a broken tail. That just mends itself though. If she starts eating properly again, there's probably nothing serious at all.

Broken tails don't always mend themselves and can also result in nerve damage. As it is painful she really should see a vet for pain relief if nothing else. Likely causes:

She's been bitten on base of tail by another cat (usually whilst running away!) so could be abscess starting

She's caught her tail in something and pulled it causing bruising, pain and possible nerve damage

She's broken her tail again will be painful etc.

All of the above need vet attention.

Hope she is back to her old self soon smile

You were but many do get better on their own, however pain relief is a must even for these cats.

Mine broke his tail in the cat flap. It needed a couple of staples, but it's fine now.

But I assume the vet gave it pain relief?? I'd be shocked if they didn't

My Norwegan Forest lady lost her tail after an argument with a cow - it got trodden on and the nerves were so damaged the only solution was amputation. Poor little thing is now lovingly known as Stumps rather than her formal Ali Kat...
