I would get one but then wouldn't all responsible owners, which probably defeats the object of them!

I remember as a kid using mt pocket money to buy my first dog Megs license 37.5p. I was really upset when they stopped it, I was proud of that responsibility smile

No, I'd get three.

No way would I risk losing my dogs.

This is a much debated argument, along with compulsory microchipping and insurance.

As with the likes of car ownership, those of us that are responsible will comply with the law. Those who couldn't give a stuff will continue to not give a stuff.

IMHO simply not worth re-introducing.

Did you keep it?

I think it would have similar results if micro chipping was enforced as a recognition of dog ownership.

It's quite possible. I have an envelope with some of her paperwork and there's a good chance it is still in there. I'll have to have a look now smile

I would definitely 110% Get a licence! I do think there need to be some sort of governing rules to owning a pooch.

The problem is, decent law abiding people wouldn't have an issue with buying a dog license. The scumbag mouth breathers who can't control their dogs wouldn't give a st.

Indeed. And it would be the poor dogs who would suffer too.

I would buy one. Knowing the government it would be £200 or based on dog size/ emissions. Would it last the lifetime of the dog or have to be renewed every year like car tax?

Abso bloody lutely. In my opinion if you have a dog it should be granted the same protection as a child. It is after all entirely dependant on the owner.

I know this is a contentious issue, but be honest here. A dog should be a privilege and not a right. They should be compulsorily chipped and insured. If government legislation with teeth would introduce this I would welcome it.

I only bought my dog on the wishes of my ex who pretty much bullied me into it. I could not believe that I could just meet some random bloke and purchase an animal that in the wrong hand could be quite dangerous.

I did however buy the dog after lots of reading on the costs and various responsibilities. The dog now lives with me and I consider him as part of my family. There is not a penny I wouldn't spend on his wellbeing. It takes a bit of financial commitment when I consider it costs more to insure him than the Porsche.
I just don't understand how some scumbag living in a flat can go and buy a dog with no long term consideration to the dogs life. Seriously, if you cannot afford to insure a dog you shouldn't be allowed to have one. And if having licences goes someway to ensuring insurance and that only suitable people purchase dogs then I'm all for it.

That is why I said legislation with teeth. If you were to be heavily fined and punished for not registering/chipping/insuring your dog then it may work. To be honest anything that restricts dog ownership to responsible owners is never going to be a bad thing and I would gladly pay for it.
