I'm a bit p!ssed off to be honest.
Discussion
I applied to be a volunteer at a local dog rescue centre. I fired off an email, explaining that I am a 39 year old professional who loves all animals. I also explained that I am a Treasury Manager with 20 years of banking experience. I also mentioned that I can drive, fluent in most computer software, can find my way around an office, spreadsheets, and have had cats & dogs since I was a child. I could build new kennels, do fund-raising, marketing, anything....
I also mentioned I'm happy to do anything to help out the charity on a Friday, or any night during the week.
I got a reply.......
Hi Nick,
Thanks very much for your offer of helping out. We'd be happy for you to dog-walk, but we're closed on Fridays. Please call the office to arrange a suitable time.
I guess I should have left out the "I'll do anything line"! I'm sure I have a lot to offer and could really help out. I don't mean to sound all big-time, but dog walking?
Think I'll try the Cattery.

You are pissed off that a place that keeps dogs (that need walking a lot) asked if you would walk the dogs when you offered to do anything to help? I find that a bit amusing.
I understand your amusement. However, if that is the biggest problem they have, perhaps they're doing just fine. I'm sure there are more needy charities out there. What jobs would you have found acceptable?
I understand you have a lot to offer them, but I would has thought managing their finances and computer systems would be low in their agenda.
As they will no doubt have a load of kennels needed cleaned out daily, walking the dogs sounds like the easy job.

You approached them offering voluntary help.
You gave a resume of who you are & what specialised areas of expertise you believe you have to offer.
They politely replied to you accepting your help in an area in which they need it.
You appear to believe that's beneath you & go on an internet forum saying they've p'd you off & you think you'll try the cattery instead.
I think they've had a lucky escape.

You should be glad they've not asked you to shovel st. I bet that's even less fun than doing it for horses.
Talk to me about it....I took the dog out a few nights ago and I had a poo bag split on me...and I bite my nails.Btw I don't really understand your complaint on this post but what I will say, they need to get to know you, go along help with the dog walking (they will really appreciate it, hopefully) once they've gotten to know you and you've built up a trust then offer to do more of the things you were hoping to become involved in. That's not an unreasonable thought is it?
They can't just let a stranger become too involved with the workings of their place but a little time should change that.

Yeah, you're right, and perhaps my initial post didn't quite come out right!
I was just expecting a more positive response, but the way the response was worded it was as if they were doing me a HUGE favour, whereas I'd like to think it would be mutually beneficial. I'll pop down there for an interview and see.

It isn't uncommon for a charity to start all newbies off in the area with the most need. Many who volunteer, do not stick with it so it wouldn't make sense for the organisation to try and train you on their systems if you're only going to be there a month. If you stick at it, I'm sure you'll find lots of areas where your help will be appreciated.
