Some people may already do this, but each time i tell some one about it they always respond with... I never thought of that!!So I thought i would share..

You know the marrow bones you can buy that are stuffed with a patte type filling, they are about 5" long and normally white.

Once the filling has gone which is usually about 4 seconds after giving it to the dog.. Cut cubes of strong cheddar and pack it right in, real hard and tight.. Microwave for a few seconds then put in the fridge so set... Hey presto a cheese bone. As far as I know all dogs love cheese...

These keep my 2 rotties occupied for at least an hour and a half... And they wont leave them for anything... Brilliant when we have people over as they wont even get up from their beds..

Try it and see what you think.

How about packing cheese straws with bone, for smaller dogs?

It has to be cheddar as it binds and goes pretty solid, which is what makes it last longer.... plus a bit of good cheddar is much better for your dog than processed cheese...

But try it..

Nice idea but not sure if that much cheddar is good in one sitting, very fattening... that said, haven't thought of a better suggestion for re-fills.

Agreed, same with anything that is frozen e.g. Peanut Butter, once it melts. Only thing I have found that keeps them occupied and doesn't make a big mess so far is frozen carrots (although that has some interesting side effects!)

I agree that too much cheese too often is a bit fattening, but this is purley as a treat every now and then, plus our 2 get about 2 hours a day up the woods....

I have never tried anything else in the bones but I imagine that pretty much anything would do... I like the peanut butter idea but can see it being messy.

The cheddar is good as it last ages with no mess.

If any other ideas?? will try them too

I use the paste from the small glass sandwich fillings pots you buy in the supermarket. Beef, Chicken, Tuna, Salmon quite a bit of variety that way.

I fill his Kong with that and he loves it.

These can chip your dog's teeth. Not a great idea to use them in my vet's opinion (and he is a dental expert).

He prefers chicken wings or better yet, regular brushing of pooch pegs. We now use a £20 electric toothbrush which works quite well in the main.

Dogs love cheese but their stomachs get upset by too much dairy food so go easy with the cheese.

Yeah absolutley, we only do the cheese bones 2-3 times a week, but mainly when we have friends over as they wont even get up from their beds....

A dog will do anything for cheese, we used small cubes to train them when they were puppies, to heel, come rollover etc.... great stuff....

My ellie used to love her Kong! I used to stuff it with grated cheese, peanut butter and then make the bulk up of it with her normal kibble, she used to spend hours trying to get the last scrap of peanut butter out of it!!!

Must admit I do let mine lick the foil top of the muller yogurt and have a few nuts if I take her to the pub, she loves dry roasted.
