Having looked after one of our daughter's classmates' budgies my wife has decided and now bought us a cockatiel. She also enthusiastically bought a very nice ornamental cage (see below) - however it's got wooden bars which the pet shop owner told us he'll eat through pretty quickly.

Does anyone know where we can get an elegant looking metal cage that's a a bit like the current one? I've done a few searches but haven't turned up any that would look OK in our kitchen and am not sure how long we have - as he's already started working on the wooden bars.

Cheers!

Cheers for the help - very useful, and appreciated.

The current one does look a bit small now he's in there. The pet shop owner said that what we had would be fine when I showed her, but the sooner we switch to a new one the better I think.

blimey what a st cage, petshop person must of been desperate for a sale with no concern for the welfare of the bird, this time of year is out of breeding season for cockatiels so one assumes that you have an adult bird in that cagenono

I hear you, and consider myself told. So we can either buy a new cage, or go back to the shop and get the budgie we originally went in for - but got upsold in the showroom.

Do you think that the above cage would be a reasonable home for a budgie though? The one we're looking after is in a cage that's definitely a smaller volume, although a different shape.

Thanks for your help. Appreciate it.

you need a cage thats best suited to the breed of bird that you are housing in it, bigger is better but please no round cages(birds fly back n forth not up n down like helicopters),were you told the cockatiel was a baby?

I cant see that cage as being suitable for any bird tbh. Theres no room for flight at all.

Thanks for the advice, all. Appreciate it. We'll either take him back or find a suitable cage by Tuesday. HNY.

I considered a Cockatiel several years ago and did a fair bit of research before deciding against it.

Whilst it doesn't have the lifespan of a parrot it can live 20 years (although not in that cage).

They are intelligent birds and you need to be willing to put in a lot of effort with them - great company if you do so though.

I'd have hoped that the pet shop owner would not have sold you the bird being aware of the cage it was destined for - though appreciate you are looking to do right by the bird now.
