Our house has had the odd mouse problem over the years (small terraced, London) but in the last few months we are being overrun by them.
I have blocked every hole that I can find with wire wool but everyday there is evidence of their visits in the sofa, bedrooms and kitchen work top.
I keep all food in cupboards and the fridge and have put traps everywhere as well as poison but still they come. I have caught a few with traps under the kitchen units but more come along to replace the dead and anyway they seem to be able to mostly avoid the traps.
One even jumped out of my son's school bag when I picked it up in the morning.
What else can I do?
Even thinking of getting a cat despite being allergic to them.

Blocking holes makes you feel like your fighting them, I know I've waged battle against the blasted things. Truth is they can gain access through just 1/4 inch gap under door or anywhere else.
They have established runs always along walls/cupboards, they don't like being in open space areas. Put down high grade bait poison and change the bait every day. It takes 10 to 15 days to kill them off, and you know you've done the job when they no longer tuck in to the poison. Catching one a day is not good enough as they breed so quickly and the babies breed again within weeks of birth.
Some mice/rats build resistance to poisons so you may need to ask your Health Officer for advise on best product available to public.

Does that not leave you with lots of dead mice decaying behind the kitchen units and so on...They have established runs always along walls/cupboards, they don't like being in open space areas.
