How cold is too cold for horses outside|?
Discussion
just put pix up of our horses - one of which is a cob who was trace clipped 6 weeks ago as normally he is ridden throughout the year. If you have a good winter rug and they have access to either a field shelter or some way of getting out of the wind - think cobs are pretty tough. our neighbours untill the really coldsnap had their cobs outside without rugs. we have a couple of throughbreds that live in at night and the main problem has been their hooves packing up with ice - giving them the equivalent of "platforms" - the cob we have has enormous plates of meat and does not seem to suffer same problem. Cobs are the toyota landcruisers of the horseworld and pretty resilient - but i would definitely rug them in this weather if you can - how ever thick their coats are
Plenty of good thick rugs (and spares so you can swap over if they get too wet) keep lots of hay out for fuel to keep warm. If finding their hooves compacting with snow then smear insides with grease / vasoline as it will prevent the snow sticking.
I never put mine out for more than an hour or two for a leg stretch in this weather, but then she was Thoroughbred and in late teens. She'd normally had enough by then and would be more than happy to come back in.

Depends just how bad it is around your way & what shelter there is from windchill.
